About this Role

Overview

Handshake is recruiting Nuclear Technicians Professionals to contribute to an hourly, temporary AI research project—but there’s no AI experience needed. In this program, you’ll leverage your professional experience to evaluate what AI models produce in your field, assess content related to your field of work, and deliver clear, structured feedback that strengthens the model’s understanding of your workplace tasks and language. The Handshake AI opportunity runs year-round, with project opportunities opening periodically across different areas of expertise.

Details

The position is remote and asynchronous; work independently from wherever you are.

The hours are flexible, with no minimum commitment, but most average 5-20 hrs

The work includes developing prompts for AI models that reflect your field, and then evaluating responses.

You’ll learn new skills and contribute to how AI is used in your field

Your placement into a project will be dependent on project availability—if you apply now and can’t work on this project, more will be available soon.

Qualifications

You have at least 4 years of professional experience in one or more of the following types of work.

The examples below reflect the types of real-world responsibilities that you might have had in your role that will give you the context needed to evaluate and train high-quality AI models

Follow nuclear equipment operational policies and procedures that ensure environmental safety.

Conduct surveillance testing to determine the safety of nuclear equipment.

Monitor nuclear reactor equipment performance to identify operational inefficiencies, hazards, or maintenance needs.

Test plant equipment to ensure proper operation.

Apply safety tags to equipment requiring maintenance.

Follow radiation-worker safety policies and procedures to ensure personnel safety.

Modify, devise, or maintain nuclear equipment used in operations.

Monitor instruments, gauges, or recording devices under the direction of nuclear experimenters.

Perform testing, maintenance, repair, or upgrading of accelerator systems.

Warn maintenance workers of radiation hazards and direct them to vacate hazardous areas.

Calculate equipment operating factors—such as radiation times, dosages, temperatures, gamma intensities, or pressures—using standard formulas and conversion tables.

Measure the intensity and identify the types of radiation in work areas, equipment, or materials using radiation detectors or other instruments.

Communicate with accelerator maintenance personnel to ensure readiness of support systems (vacuum, water cooling, radio-frequency power sources).

Identify and implement appropriate decontamination procedures based on equipment and the size, nature, and type of contamination.

Decontaminate objects by cleaning with soap or solvents or by abrading with brushes, buffing machines, or sandblasting machines.

Collect air, water, gas, or solid samples for testing to determine radioactivity levels or ensure proper radioactive containment.

Determine or recommend radioactive decontamination procedures according to equipment characteristics and degree of contamination.

Set up equipment that automatically detects area radiation deviations and test detection equipment to ensure accuracy.

You’re able to participate in asynchronous work in partnership with leading AI labs.

Frequently Asked Questions

I graduated 5 years ago. Should I use this?

Probably not. Handshake is designed for university students and 'early talent' (people within ~1-2 years of graduation). You will likely find better rates and faster approval on Outlier or Mercor if you are an experienced professional.

Is 'Handshake' the employer?

Technically, yes. For the specific 'AI Fellowship' roles, Handshake acts as the employer of record. This is different from the rest of the website, which is just a job board listing jobs for other companies.

Is this traditional consulting?

Not exactly. You act as a "Teacher" for advanced AI. Instead of client deliverables, you are given complex scenarios to evaluate. You grade the AI's logic, correct its hallucinations, and provide expert-level reasoning. Your job is to train the model to think like you do.

Why is the pay so high?

This role requires deep, verified expertise. General knowledge isn't enough; the model is specifically being trained on "edge cases"—the rare, difficult, or highly technical nuances that only a senior professional would know.

What is the workload like?

This is cognitive, deep work. Unlike simple data labeling, you might spend 45-60 minutes on a single task, researching citations or verifying complex calculations. Quality is prioritized over speed.

Is this an internship?

It depends. Handshake lists both standard internships and specific "AI Trainer" fellowships. Check the job description closely—if it mentions "1099" or "Contract," it is a freelance role, not a W-2 employment offer.
