About this Role
What You'll Do
- Design Advanced Engineering Problems β Craft challenging, domain-specific problems across FEA (Finite Element Analysis), heat transfer, kinematics, fluid dynamics, and material science to stress-test AI performance
- Author Ground-Truth Solutions β Develop rigorous, step-by-step technical solutions and "golden responses" that serve as benchmarks for AI learning and evaluation
- Audit AI Reasoning β Evaluate AI-generated outputs including CAD logic, thermodynamic proofs, and material specifications for technical accuracy, safety, and compliance with engineering standards (e.g., ASME, ISO)
- Identify and Fix Reasoning Failures β Pinpoint logical errors in AI outputs β such as incorrect force distributions, energy conservation violations, or flawed kinematic assumptions β and provide structured feedback to improve model reasoning
- Document Failure Modes β Systematically record how and why AI models fail on specific problem types to help research teams harden model performance
About the Role
We're partnering with the world's leading AI research labs to build smarter, more technically rigorous AI models β and we need mechanical engineers who know their stuff to make it happen. As a Mechanical Engineering Expert, you'll be on the front lines of AI development: designing complex engineering problems, authoring authoritative solutions, and auditing AI reasoning across fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, structural mechanics, and more. Your expertise will directly shape how the next generation of AI models thinks through real engineering challenges. This is a fully remote, flexible contract role β work on your schedule, contribute at the level that suits you, and make a genuine impact on cutting-edge technology.
- Organization: Alignerr
- Type: Hourly Contract
- Location: Remote
- Commitment: 10β40 hours/week
Who You Are
- Advanced Degree β Master's (pursuing or completed) or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related discipline
- Strong Domain Knowledge β Deep foundational expertise in one or more core areas: solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, CAD/CAM, or manufacturing processes
- Clear Technical Communicator β Able to explain complex physical phenomena and mathematical reasoning in precise, well-structured written form
- Detail-Oriented β High precision when reviewing mathematical derivations, unit conversions, dimensional analysis, and physical system constraints
- No prior AI experience required β if you know mechanical engineering, we'll handle the rest
Nice to Have
- Experience with data annotation, data quality assessment, or evaluation workflows
- Familiarity with engineering software such as SolidWorks, MATLAB, or ANSYS β especially for evaluating AI-generated code or simulation workflows
- Background in academic research, technical writing, or engineering education
Why Join Us
- Work on genuinely cutting-edge AI projects alongside top research labs and AI teams
- Fully remote and asynchronous β work when and where it suits you
- Freelance flexibility: set your own hours, maintain full autonomy
- Gain rare, first-hand exposure to how advanced large language models (LLMs) are trained and evaluated
- Collaborate with a global community of technical experts and researchers
- Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as projects evolve
Requirements
- Fluent proficiency in English (Written & Verbal)
- Reliable high-speed internet connection
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience
- Demonstrated expertise in Mathematics

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the assessment actually like?
Notoriously strict. Alignerr uses TestGorilla for role-specific timed tests β a blank coding environment for engineers, rigorous grammar and fact-checking for writers. There is almost no hand-holding. The critical catch: this is essentially a one-shot process. Fail or abandon the assessment, and you are typically locked out of that role permanently with no option to retake.
How quickly can I start earning after I pass?
Not immediately. Even after passing the assessment and completing identity verification (via Persona) and billing setup (via Deel), you may sit in a waiting pool for weeks or months. You only start earning when a project matching your specific skills launches and you are officially assigned. Do not plan around Alignerr income until you are actively on a project.
Is there a community?
Yes β and it is one of Alignerr's genuine strengths. Once assigned to a project, you are added to Slack channels where you can ask questions, get rubric clarifications from admins, and talk to other AI trainers. This is rare in AI training and makes a real difference when guidelines are ambiguous or change mid-project.
What does the work actually look like?
It is practical, hands-on data work. You might be recording short videos, categorizing images, rating text responses, or analyzing data. The tasks are designed to be short and distinctβtypically 5-60 minutes per task.
How flexible is the schedule?
Extremely. This is true "log in and work" flexibility. You can usually work for 20 minutes or 4 hours depending on your availability. There are rarely minimum hour requirements, making it ideal for side income.
Is there an interview?
Usually, no. Hiring for these roles is almost entirely based on passing an automated assessment or "qualification" task. If you pass the test, you get access to the work.
What is the barrier to entry?
Alignerr is known for difficult technical assessments. You must pass a timed test in your specific domain (e.g., Python, Physics, or Language) before you are eligible for any paid projects.
