Role Overview

Location Requirements

Role Overview Mercor is partnering with leading AI labs on Project Atlas — an initiative to build realistic enterprise environments that frontier AI agents are trained and evaluated in. We're seeking experienced legal-operations and legal-technology professionals from AmLaw 100 firms, Fortune 500 in-house legal departments, and major legal-tech vendors to recreate the digital workspaces they run every day and design the tasks that genuinely challenge state-of-the-art AI. You'll bring your expertise in legal operations, e-discovery, contract lifecycle management, and matter/spend management to build a high-fidelity environment that mirrors the tools, files, and cross-functional workflows of a sophisticated legal department or law firm — and then author tasks grounded in the programs you actually run today. Key Responsibilities Build a realistic digital workspace centered on the Drive folders you use day-to-day — the process maps, intake forms, matter-management reports, CLM rollouts, e-discovery plans, vendor-evaluation decks, and email threads that reflect how you actually organize your work — with some representation of the platforms that support it (e.g., Icertis or HotDocs, Relativity, Clio / MyCase) Design multi-step tasks grounded in your real workflows that require navigating multiple apps, files, and stakeholders in a way that meaningfully challenges frontier AI agents Collaborate with other legal-operations and legal-tech experts in your field to design the environment, shape task scope, and review each other's scenarios for realism and rigor Work asynchronously with research teams to refine task designs and evaluation criteria for legal-tech agent benchmarks Contribute to frontier AI research and benchmarking — the work you produce directly informs how leading labs train and evaluate the next generation of AI systems Ideal Qualifications 3+ years of full-time experience in legal operations or legal technology at an AmLaw 100 firm, Fortune 500 in-house legal department, or major legal-tech vendor Background in one or more areas such as: Legal operations, process improvement, and legal-spend management E-discovery and review workflows Contract lifecycle management Matter management and e-billing Legal intake, knowledge management, and enterprise-wide legal program design CLOC / ACC Legal Ops involvement a plus Day-to-day use of Relativity, Icertis, HotDocs / Contract Express, and Clio / MyCase Strong analytical thinking and writing — able to translate legal-ops workflows into structured task specs Compensation Note This project is expected to begin on an effective hourly rate, but will transition to a model where experts are compensated based on throughput of quality work rather than a flat accruing hourly rate. Mercor is a talent marketplace that connects top experts with leading AI labs and research organizations. Backed by investors including Benchmark, General Catalyst, Adam D'Angelo, and Jack Dorsey. Thousands of professionals across domains contribute to projects shaping the next generation of AI systems. We consider all qualified applicants without regard to legally protected characteristics and provide reasonable accommodations upon request. Mercor partners with leading AI labs and enterprises to train frontier models using human expertise. You will work on projects that focus on training and enhancing AI systems. You will be paid competitively, collaborate with leading researchers, and help shape the next generation of AI systems in your area of expertise. Posted 25 days ago

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this for freelancers or full-time employees?

Both. Mercor tries to match you with clients who want long-term contractors. Unlike other platforms where you log in and grab small tasks, Mercor matches you with one company for a steady role (e.g., 'Python Tutor for 3 months').

I'm not comfortable on camera. Can I still apply?

No. The application requires a video interview with an AI avatar. The AI asks you questions about your resume, and the video is shared with potential clients to prove your communication skills.

Does it cost money to join?

No. You should never pay to join these platforms. Mercor makes money by charging the client a fee on top of your hourly rate.

What does the work actually look like?

It is practical, hands-on data work. You might be recording short videos, categorizing images, rating text responses, or analyzing data. The tasks are designed to be short and distinct—typically 5-60 minutes per task.

How flexible is the schedule?

Extremely. This is true "log in and work" flexibility. You can usually work for 20 minutes or 4 hours depending on your availability. There are rarely minimum hour requirements, making it ideal for side income.

Is there an interview?

Usually, no. Hiring for these roles is almost entirely based on passing an automated assessment or "qualification" task. If you pass the test, you get access to the work.

How soon will I start?

Important: Mercor is a talent marketplace, not a task queue. Applying puts you in a pool of candidates. You will only start working when a specific client (like a major AI lab) selects your profile. This matching process can take weeks.
