About this Role
From the SME Careers listing
In this hourly, remote contractor role, you will work as a PR & Communications Subject Matter Expert (SME) to review AI-generated PR/communications outputs and/or create expert communications content, evaluating reasoning quality, messaging discipline, and step-by-step decision-making while providing precise written feedback. You will assess solutions for clarity, accuracy, tone, stakeholder fit, and adherence to the prompt; identify issues in narrative coherence, positioning, media readiness, reputational risk, claims/compliance, and crisis-response logic; fact-check statements where needed; write high-quality explanations and model deliverables (e.g., press releases, statements, FAQs, pitches, comms plans) that demonstrate best practices; and rate and compare multiple responses based on effectiveness, correctness, and reasoning quality. This role is with SME Careers, a fast-growing AI Data Services company and subsidiary of SuperAnnotate, delivering training data for many of the world’s largest AI companies and foundation-model labs. Your PR and communications expertise directly helps improve the world’s premier AI models by making their public-facing writing more accurate, on-message, risk-aware, and clearly explained.
Important: There is no immediate project for this role; however, if qualified, you will be among the first experts we reach out to when relevant opportunities arise. This will also provide you with access to future projects available through our expert network.
Key responsibilities
- Develop AI Training Content: Create detailed prompts and gold-standard PR/comms outputs (press releases, statements, pitches, FAQs, comms plans) to guide AI learning.
- Optimize AI Performance: Evaluate and rank AI responses to improve message discipline, clarity, credibility, and stakeholder fit.
- Ensure Model Integrity: Test AI outputs for inaccuracies, reputational risk, bias, and unsafe claims; validate reliability across scenarios (product launch, incident response, policy change).
Your profile
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
- 5+ years of professional experience in PR and/or communications (agency or in-house), including writing and media-facing deliverables.
- Strong command of message development: narratives, proof points, objection handling, Q&A/FAQ frameworks, and tone control.
- Experience producing core comms assets: press releases, media pitches, bylines, statements, talking points, internal comms, and executive notes.
- Ability to evaluate outputs for accuracy, defensibility, and risk (overclaims, legal/compliance sensitivity, forward-looking statements, confidentiality).
- Familiarity with crisis comms principles: rapid response, stakeholder mapping, escalation paths, holding statements, and post-incident learnings.
- Strong editing and QA skills; ability to provide specific, actionable feedback and write gold-standard rewrites with rationale; minimum C1 English proficiency.
- Reliable, self-directed, and able to deliver consistent quality in an hourly, remote contractor workflow across time zones.
- Prior experience with AI data training/annotation, editorial QA, newsroom/press office workflows, or comms review is strongly preferred.
🌍 Geographic Availability This role is available to qualified experts globally. However, as a U.S.-based company, SME Careers complies with U.S. export control and sanctions regulations. Eligibility depends on your country of residence and any applicable trade restrictions. Some projects may have additional language or region-specific requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does SME Careers offer a path for advancement?
Yes. SME Careers is unusual among AI training platforms for this: it publishes an explicit career ladder, Data Trainer, then Quality Analyst, then QA Lead, then Project Manager. Consistent, high-quality work is what moves you up it.
How does SME Careers pay freelancers?
Weekly, through Deel. Deel also handles tax compliance, which is how SME Careers pays contractors across more than 40 countries without running its own international payroll.
Is SME Careers work ongoing or project-based?
Project-based. Assignment duration and availability vary by project, but consistently high-quality work earns priority access to whatever comes next.
What does task-based AI training work actually look like?
Practical, hands-on data work: recording short videos, categorizing images, rating text responses, or analyzing data. Tasks are designed to be short and distinct, typically 5 to 60 minutes each.
What does asynchronous AI training work mean in practice?
No set hours, no check-ins, no meetings. You log in when you want, pick up an available task, complete it, and submit; nobody is waiting on you in real time. That's different from remote employment, where you're expected online during business hours. The tradeoff: you're competing with others for available tasks, so an empty queue means there's simply nothing to do until more work is released.
Do task-based AI training roles require an interview?
Check the Job Facts panel above for this specific listing. Where no fact is confirmed yet: most of these roles skip a live interview and gate access through an automated assessment or qualification task instead, though some do add an interview step, so don't assume either way until you check the application flow.
What does Business work look like for a PR & Communications Expert?
Tasks here are scoped to Business, not generic labeling. As a PR & Communications Expert, expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to Business) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on Business background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.
What happens when I click Apply on this listing?
You'll be taken to SME Careers's external site to complete your application there. This listing links through a referral, but the process is identical to applying directly; the link just routes you correctly. Create an account on their site and follow their onboarding steps.
Who is behind SME Careers?
