Active quality monitoring runs quality checks — gold-set accuracy, agreement rates, rejection trends — continuously while annotation work is happening, rather than as a single audit after a batch is complete. The goal is to catch a quality problem while it's small: a guideline misunderstanding affecting the last hundred items is far cheaper to fix than the same misunderstanding discovered after ten thousand items are already labeled.
This requires infrastructure most one-off annotation efforts don't build: real-time dashboards, automatic gold-item injection, and alerting when an individual annotator's or a whole batch's metrics drift outside expected ranges.
Active monitoring is what makes fast task-queue gating possible — an annotator's access to higher-tier work can update within hours of a quality shift rather than waiting for a periodic review cycle.
What this means for trainers
Because monitoring is often near-real-time, sustained quality matters more than any single good or bad session — a brief rough patch is usually recoverable if the overall trend stays solid.
