Synthetic Data

Artificially generated data designed to supplement or replace real-world training data while preserving statistical properties.

Synthetic data refers to text, code, or media generated entirely by an AI model, rather than created or collected by humans. In the context of LLM training, synthetic data has become one of the most critical and controversial frontiers in AI development, as labs rapidly exhaust the supply of high-quality human text on the public internet.

Instead of paying humans to write thousands of coding tutorials or complex reasoning puzzles, AI labs use their most capable 'frontier' models to generate this data at scale. For example, a model might be prompted to 'generate 500 unique, difficult Python interview questions and provide the perfect, commented solution for each.' This synthetic dataset is then used to fine-tune a smaller, cheaper model, transferring the reasoning capabilities of the large model to the smaller one.

While synthetic data is incredibly cheap and scalable, it carries massive risks, primarily 'model collapse'. If a model is trained recursively on its own synthetic output, it begins to amplify its own hallucinations, biases, and structural quirks, eventually degenerating into repetitive nonsense.

To prevent this, synthetic data must be aggressively filtered. High-quality human trainers are frequently employed to audit synthetic datasets, fixing errors, rewriting unnatural phrasing, and ensuring the data remains grounded in reality before it is fed back into the training pipeline.

What this means for trainers

You will frequently encounter tasks where you are asked to review, edit, or score text that was clearly written by an AI. Your job is to inject human nuance back into the loop. Strip out the 'AI tone' (overly verbose, repetitive structures), fix subtle logical errors, and ensure the synthetic data meets the gold standard for human quality.
