You log into Outlier (Scale AI), ready to work, and the dashboard says "Your queue is currently empty." The first thought is am I fired?
Usually not. An empty queue (EQ, in the community's shorthand) can mean a project ended or paused, a roster was reshuffled, a dashboard that has not caught up with an allocation, or an account under quality review. This guide covers how to tell which one you have and what to do about each.
A "finding a project" message means wait; an "under review" message means act
- "We are finding a project that matches your skills" is normal. Your account is in good standing; check Discourse and wait.
- "Your account is under review" usually follows a run of weak submissions. Reread your recent work and contact support once if it lasts more than a few days.
- Finish every enablement or training task you are offered. An unfinished one can keep real projects out of your queue.
- Discourse, not your dashboard, is where allocations are announced first.
- Outlier's queues empty without notice, so keep a second platform such as Alignerr or SME Careers active.
An empty queue usually means the project moved, not that you did

So a project can exist while your dashboard says nothing, or it can fill before your dashboard shows it. That is why the first move is Discourse, not a support ticket.
Project drops are announced on Discourse before they reach your dashboard
Outlier moved its community from Slack to Discourse, its own forum, and project managers post allocation announcements there. A typical one reads:
"Just loaded 500 tasks in 'Bee' project."
"Reply here if you are EQ and want to be added."
How to use it
- 1. Log into Outlier Discourse daily.
- 2. Go to your domain category (Coding, Generalist, Math and so on).
- 3. Watch the allocation and queue threads.
- 4. Reply as soon as a drop is posted. Managers add people from the replies, in order.
- 5. Turn on notifications for the threads in your category.
Many contributors never open Discourse, so the people who reply early compete with a smaller group than the whole platform.
An unfinished enablement task can keep your queue empty
Open your Training or Enablement tab. If a low-paid or unpaid training task is sitting there, complete it now.
Why it matters
Projects gate entry on their training task. Until you finish it, the project does not treat you as qualified, and nothing from it reaches your queue.
Contributors describe sitting in EQ for weeks with an unfinished training task, completing it, and seeing project tasks appear the same day.
The message on your dashboard tells you which kind of EQ you have
Not every empty queue is the same. Read the exact message, which contributors sort into two kinds.
"Finding a project"
"We are currently finding a project that matches your skills..."
Meaning: your account is in good standing and no project is allocated to you right now. Check Discourse and wait.
"Under review"
"Your account is currently under review..."
Meaning: a quality check flagged your account and a reviewer is looking at your work.
If you see "finding a project":
Refresh the dashboard once a day, check Discourse, and finish any training task on offer.
If you see "under review":
Reread your recent submissions against the project rubric, then contact support once (next section).

A review that lasts more than a few days is worth one ticket. Keep it short and factual.

Quality reviews follow a run of weak submissions
Outlier spot-checks submissions against the project rubric and against other contributors' ratings. A run of low-scoring submissions triggers a review; Outlier does not publish the threshold.
How to stay out of review
- Reread the rubric before every submission.
- Write out your reasoning when a rating could go either way.
- Do not rush. Speed is what drags quality scores down.
- Submit fewer, better tasks. One careful rating beats three quick ones.
Keep a second platform running for the quiet weeks
Outlier's queues empty when projects end, and contributors report the quietest stretches around the US summer and the end-of-year holidays, when even strong accounts sit in EQ.
