Apply on joinhandshake.com/ai with your education and field. Onboarding includes identity verification, a background check and an assessment. You don't need a .edu email: eligibility is US residence and valid work authorization, and F-1 students on CPT or OPT can qualify (STEM OPT is excluded).

Weekly through Stripe. Handshake's support site says payouts are sent by Wednesday for the previous Monday to Sunday week. A pending suit alleges fellows are misclassified as contractors, so confirm your terms in writing before you start.
A proposed class action filed in the Northern District of California on July 20, 2026 alleges Handshake misclassified its AI annotators as contractors, citing unilaterally set rates, mandated tooling, weekly hour caps and uncompensated onboarding. These are allegations. Handshake had not filed a response as of August 9, 2026, and we found no update as of October 1, 2026.
