Fabrication Specialist Interview Questions for AI Training Work

AI training platforms hire people with a Fabrication Specialist background to evaluate AI outputs in that field, checking whether an answer is factually sound, appropriately reasoned, or safe to act on in ways a generalist reviewer couldn't judge. The screening interview is built to confirm that expertise, drawing on Metal cutting techniques, Welding and assembly processes and Quality control measures.

Below are 10 questions pulled from that kind of interview, split into technical, scenario, and behavioral rounds, each with a full written answer so you can see what a strong response sounds like.

Technical (5)

How do you decide which cutting technique is appropriate for a given metal type and thickness?

I match the technique to the material's properties and the tolerance the job requires, since a method that works well on thin sheet metal can produce a poor edge or excess heat distortion on thicker stock. I factor in whether the edge quality needs further finishing, since that affects whether a faster, rougher cut is acceptable.

What's your approach to selecting the right welding process and settings for a specific joint and material combination?

I consider the base material, joint type, and the strength requirements of the finished piece, since the wrong process or settings can produce a weld that looks acceptable but has weaker penetration or excess distortion than the application calls for. I run a test weld on scrap material when working with an unfamiliar material combination rather than guessing at settings on the actual piece.

How do you catch a quality issue in a fabrication before it becomes a problem in the finished assembly?

I inspect at key stages throughout the process rather than only at final inspection, since catching a dimensional or weld quality issue early is far cheaper and easier to fix than discovering it after the piece has moved further down the assembly process. I check critical measurements against spec at each major step rather than assuming earlier steps were correct.

What's your process for reading a fabrication drawing that has ambiguous or unclear tolerances for a specific feature?

I flag the ambiguity and confirm with engineering or the relevant stakeholder before proceeding, rather than guessing at the intended tolerance, since fabricating to the wrong assumption can mean scrapping an otherwise good piece. Getting clarity upfront costs far less time than discovering the mismatch after the piece is finished.

How do you decide whether a minor defect found during quality control is acceptable to pass or needs rework?

I check the defect against the actual specification and the functional requirement of the piece, rather than a purely visual judgment, since a cosmetic imperfection might be fully acceptable while a similarly minor-looking structural issue might not be. I don't pass anything I'm not confident meets the actual functional requirement, even under production pressure.

Scenario (3)

A batch of parts fails quality inspection at a rate higher than usual, and it's not immediately clear why. How do you investigate?

I'd look for what changed recently, material batch, equipment calibration, or a process step, rather than assuming operator error by default, since a systemic cause affecting a whole batch usually points to something upstream rather than an individual mistake repeated across many parts. I'd isolate the variable by testing a small batch under controlled conditions if the cause isn't obvious.

You're partway through a job when you realize the material delivered doesn't match the specification the job was planned around. How do you handle it?

I'd stop and flag the discrepancy rather than proceeding and adjusting technique to compensate, since fabricating with the wrong material can produce a part that looks right but doesn't meet the actual functional requirement. I'd confirm the correct material or get sign-off on a substitution before continuing.

A production deadline is tight, and there's pressure to skip a quality control check to save time. How do you respond?

I wouldn't skip the check, since a defect that passes through undetected can cost far more in rework or downstream failure than the time saved by skipping the inspection. I'd look for ways to make up time elsewhere in the process rather than compromising on quality control.

Behavioral (2)

Tell me about a time you caught a quality issue that could have caused a bigger problem downstream.

During an inspection of a weld joint that looked acceptable visually, I noticed a slight inconsistency that prompted a closer check, which revealed incomplete penetration that wouldn't have met the load requirement for that piece. Flagging it before it moved to final assembly avoided a much costlier failure discovery later in the process.

Describe a situation where you had to adjust your technique for an unfamiliar material or job requirement.

I was assigned a job involving a metal alloy I hadn't worked with extensively, which behaved differently under standard cutting and welding settings than the materials I was more used to. I ran test cuts and welds on scrap first rather than applying my usual settings directly to the actual piece, which let me dial in the right approach without risking the real material.

Knowing the answer and saying it out loud under pressure are different skills.
