About this role
From the AfterQuery listing
IT support specialists to build the troubleshooting scenarios frontier AI labs use to test model judgment.
AfterQuery builds the expert evaluation data that frontier AI labs use to measure and improve their models. We're hiring IT support specialists as contractors to author and grade the troubleshooting scenarios those evaluations run on.

Author realistic IT support scenarios, from first contact through diagnosis and resolution
Write reference answers with the diagnostic reasoning behind each step
Grade model output for technical accuracy and user safety
Flag advice that reads plausible but would make the problem worse
Who this is for
Specialists with at least 2 years in IT support, help desk, or system administration
Practitioners with hands on experience in enterprise environments such as Active Directory, Microsoft 365, or MDM tools
Troubleshooters with depth across hardware, software, and networking issues
Clear writers who can document the reasoning behind a diagnostic decision

About AfterQuery
AfterQuery is an expert data lab. We build the evaluation and training data that frontier AI labs use to measure what their models can and can't do in real professional work. Our contributors are practicing professionals, not annotators, and the work is credited, reviewed, and paid at professional rates.
How long hiring takes
Across the AI training platforms we refer candidates to, the median gap between referral and hire is about 30 days. It varies by platform and role, so treat it as a rough guide for this one.
Interview Prep
Sample questions for a IT Support Specialist role, written in-house to help you prepare.
How do you approach troubleshooting a network connectivity issue when a user can't give you much detail beyond 'the internet isn't working'?
I start with a structured set of checks, physical connection, then local network, then broader connectivity, rather than guessing based on the vague description, since a systematic approach finds the actual cause faster than jumping to the most common explanation. I also ask targeted follow-up questions to narrow down when the issue started and what changed.
What's your process for prioritizing support tickets when you have several open at once with different urgency levels?
I prioritize based on business impact, like whether an issue is blocking someone from working entirely versus a minor inconvenience, rather than working tickets in the order they arrived. A quick fix for a low-impact issue can wait behind a critical issue even if it came in first.
How do you explain a technical issue and its fix to a user who has no technical background?
I focus on what the issue meant for them practically and what to expect going forward, rather than the technical details of the fix, unless they specifically want more depth. Users generally care about whether it's fixed and what to do if it happens again, not the underlying mechanism.
What's your approach to diagnosing an intermittent issue that you can't reproduce on demand?
I gather as much detail as possible about the conditions when it occurs, like time of day or specific applications in use, and check logs from those windows rather than waiting to catch it live. Intermittent issues usually have a pattern that becomes visible once you look at multiple occurrences together.
Why this role
Few outlets pay IT & Systems specialists what the leading AI labs pay for direct judgment. At $62/hr, this IT Support Specialist Expert role prices in the expertise itself, separate from hours billed or clients managed.

Common questions
How long do AfterQuery projects last?
Typically 2 to 3 weeks at 10 to 20 hours a week. There's no guaranteed follow-on work once a project closes, so treat it as a high-pay burst contract rather than steady income. AfterQuery does re-hire specialists for new campaigns, but that depends entirely on what AI labs are training at the time.
When does AfterQuery pay contractors?
On a per-contract schedule, typically net-15 to net-30 from invoice submission rather than the weekly payouts some platforms offer. Confirm the exact terms in your contract, and ask your project contact directly if payment timing affects your cash flow.
Do task-based AI training roles require an interview?
Most skip a live interview entirely and gate access through an automated assessment or qualification task instead. Where we've confirmed the specific requirement for this listing, it's called out above in What We Know About This Role.
What does task-based AI training work look like?
Practical, hands-on data work: recording short videos, categorizing images, rating text responses, or analyzing data. Tasks are designed to be short and distinct, typically 5 to 60 minutes each.
What does IT & Systems work look like for an IT Support Specialist Expert?
Tasks here are scoped to IT & Systems, not generic labeling. As an IT Support Specialist Expert, expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to IT & Systems) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on IT & Systems background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.
What specific skills does this listing call for?
Expert is named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with this, expect the screening process to test for it directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.
How much does this specific role pay?
This listing is posted at $62/hr, an hourly rate. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.
What happens when I click Apply on this listing?
You'll be taken to Afterquery's external site to complete your application there. This listing links through a referral, but the process is identical to applying directly; the link just routes you correctly. Create an account on their site and follow their onboarding steps.
