About this role
From the AfterQuery listing
UI/UX designers to build the design evaluation and Figma workflow scenarios frontier AI labs use to test model judgment.
AfterQuery builds the expert evaluation data that frontier AI labs use to measure and improve their models. We're hiring UI/UX designers as contractors to author and grade the design scenarios those evaluations run on.
What you'll actually do
Author realistic product design scenarios from brief through polished UI, the kind a working designer would actually receive.
Write reference critiques with the design reasoning behind each judgment, from hierarchy and spacing to interaction patterns.
Grade generated UIs for usability, visual craft, and whether they would survive contact with real users.
Demonstrate Figma workflows, from auto layout and components to prototyping, the way designers actually work.
Who this is for
Product, UI, or UX designers with at least two years of professional experience and shipped work to show.
Designers who live in Figma and can articulate why a design works, not just make it look good.
People with strong written English who can turn design intuition into clear, teachable reasoning.
Practitioners who notice when a generated interface looks designed but would fail real users.
Contract and pay
$60 to $120/hr, paid weekly via Stripe. Your rate is set from your experience, not negotiated down after you start.
Fully remote, fully async. No fixed hours.
Minimum 10 hours per week, no maximum. Scale up or down week to week.
No screen recording, no keystroke monitoring, no idle timers.
Independent contractor. Ongoing project work rather than single task batches.
How our hiring process works
Apply at /apply/ui-ux-designer-expert. About five minutes. Resume plus a few structured questions.
Resume review. Every application gets read against a published rubric and gets a decision.
Written assessment. You may be asked to take a written assessment for further placement.
Onboarding. Sign the contractor agreement, connect Stripe, and get platform access.
Project match. You're matched to live work in your specialty, usually within a week of onboarding.
About AfterQuery
AfterQuery is an expert data lab. We build the evaluation and training data that frontier AI labs use to measure what their models can and can't do in real professional work. Our contributors are practicing professionals, not annotators, and the work is credited, reviewed, and paid at professional rates.
How long hiring takes
Across the AI training platforms we refer candidates to, the median gap between referral and hire is about 30 days. It varies by platform and role, so treat it as a rough guide for this one.
Interview Prep
Sample questions for a UI/UX Designer role, written in-house to help you prepare.
How do you decide what user research method to use, like interviews versus surveys versus usability testing, for a given design question?
The method depends on what kind of question I'm answering. Interviews surface the why behind behavior and are good early, when I'm still forming hypotheses. Surveys validate how common a pattern is across a larger sample once I already have a hypothesis. Usability testing answers whether a specific design solution actually works, which needs a working prototype rather than abstract questions.
How do you decide how much fidelity a prototype needs to be before testing it with users?
Low-fidelity wireframes are enough for testing information architecture and flow, since users can evaluate structure without visual polish distracting them. Higher fidelity becomes necessary once I'm testing something visual details actually affect, like whether a specific button reads as clickable, since a rough sketch won't answer that question reliably.
How do you balance visual design consistency with a design system against the need for a specific screen to solve a unique problem?
I default to the design system's existing components and patterns, since consistency reduces cognitive load for users across the product. I only deviate when a genuine, well-justified need exists that the system doesn't already solve, and when I do deviate, I feed that pattern back into the system rather than leaving it as a one-off exception nobody else can reuse.
How do you interpret conflicting signals between what users say they want in an interview and what usability testing shows they actually do?
I weight behavioral data from usability testing more heavily than stated preference from interviews, since users are often inaccurate predictors of their own future behavior. Interviews are still valuable for understanding motivation and context, but when there's a direct conflict between stated preference and observed behavior, the behavior is the more reliable signal for the actual design decision.
Why this role
$90/hr for UI/UX Designer Expert work puts your Design expertise on the same footing as an AI lab's own research staff, without the overhead of running a consulting practice around it.

Common questions
How long do AfterQuery projects last?
Typically 2 to 3 weeks at 10 to 20 hours a week. There's no guaranteed follow-on work once a project closes, so treat it as a high-pay burst contract rather than steady income. AfterQuery does re-hire specialists for new campaigns, but that depends entirely on what AI labs are training at the time.
When does AfterQuery pay contractors?
On a per-contract schedule, typically net-15 to net-30 from invoice submission rather than the weekly payouts some platforms offer. Confirm the exact terms in your contract, and ask your project contact directly if payment timing affects your cash flow.
Do task-based AI training roles require an interview?
Most skip a live interview entirely and gate access through an automated assessment or qualification task instead. Where we've confirmed the specific requirement for this listing, it's called out above in What We Know About This Role.
What does task-based AI training work look like?
Practical, hands-on data work: recording short videos, categorizing images, rating text responses, or analyzing data. Tasks are designed to be short and distinct, typically 5 to 60 minutes each.
What does Design work look like for an UI/UX Designer Expert?
Tasks here are scoped to Design, not generic labeling. As an UI/UX Designer Expert, expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to Design) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on Design background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.
What specific skills does this listing call for?
English and Expert are named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with these, expect the screening process to test for them directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.
How much does this specific role pay?
This listing is posted at $90/hr, an hourly rate. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.
What happens when I click Apply on this listing?
You'll be taken to Afterquery's external site to complete your application there. This listing links through a referral, but the process is identical to applying directly; the link just routes you correctly. Create an account on their site and follow their onboarding steps.
