What You'll Do
- Listen to German-language audio recordings and produce precise, verbatim transcriptions
- Handle challenging audio conditions — including crosstalk, filled pauses ("ähm," "hmm"), background noise, and multiple simultaneous speakers
- Accurately identify and distinguish between different speakers throughout recordings
- Follow detailed style and formatting guidelines with consistency and precision
- Apply transcription conventions for non-verbal sounds, incomplete utterances, and other spoken-language phenomena
- Maintain high quality and accuracy standards across large volumes of audio
- Work independently and asynchronously on task-based assignments at your own pace
About the Role
What if your ability to catch every word — through crosstalk, background noise, and overlapping speakers — could directly shape how AI understands spoken German? We're looking for detail-oriented transcriptionists based in Germany to produce accurate, high-quality transcriptions of German-language audio, helping build the datasets that teach AI systems how real people actually speak. This is a fully remote, flexible contract role ideal for anyone with native German fluency, strong listening skills, and the patience to get every word right. Whether you have a background in transcription, linguistics, subtitling, or media — or simply possess an exceptional ear and a meticulous work ethic — we want to hear from you.
- Organization: Alignerr
- Type: Hourly Contract
- Location: Remote (Germany)
- Commitment: 10–40 hours/week
Who You Are
- Native or near-native fluency in German — you catch every nuance, regional dialect cue, and filler word
- Exceptional listening skills with the ability to parse difficult or noisy audio
- Highly detail-oriented with a methodical, patient approach to repetitive tasks
- Comfortable following and consistently applying detailed style guides and formatting rules
- Strong written German skills — spelling, punctuation, and grammar in both standard Hochdeutsch and colloquial registers come naturally to you
- Self-motivated and reliable when working independently without direct supervision
- Comfortable using web-based tools and platforms
Nice to Have
- Professional experience in transcription, court reporting, or stenography
- Background in subtitling, closed-captioning, or media post-production
- Linguistics training or academic background in German language studies
- Prior experience with annotation platforms or data labeling workflows
- Familiarity with transcription software or audio editing tools
- Knowledge of German regional dialects — Bavarian, Saxon, Swabian, Swiss German, or Austrian variants

Common questions
How soon can I start earning on Alignerr after passing the assessment?
Not right away. After passing, you still complete identity verification through Persona and billing setup through Deel, then wait in a pool for weeks or months. You only start earning once a project matching your specific skills launches and assigns you. Don't count on Alignerr income until you're actively placed on a project.
Does Alignerr have a trainer community?
Yes, and it's a genuine strength. Once you're assigned to a project, you join Slack channels where you can get rubric clarifications from admins and talk to other trainers. That kind of support is rare in AI training and matters most when guidelines are ambiguous or shift mid-project.
Do creative AI training roles allow creative freedom?
Some, within limits. You're hired for your talent, but most projects still require following strict style guides, like keeping a neutral tone or matching a technical-manual style. Consistency across the dataset matters more than personal expression here.
What equipment do I need for creative AI training roles?
For voice or audio roles at this pay level, a professional home studio setup (XLR microphone, acoustically treated room) is typically required. Phone recordings and laptop mics usually get rejected by quality control.
What does Languages work look like for a German Audio Transcriptionist (AI Training)?
Tasks here are scoped to Languages, not generic labeling. As a German Audio Transcriptionist (AI Training), expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to Languages) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on Languages background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.
What specific skills does this listing call for?
German is named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with this, expect the screening process to test for it directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.
How much does this specific role pay?
This listing is posted at $10–$35/hr, an hourly rate. The range reflects experience level and negotiated terms, not a placeholder, so where you land in it depends on your background and the assessment. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.
Do I need to be fluent in German?
Yes. This role specifically requires German proficiency, on top of the English most AI training work assumes by default. If German is not a language you're fluent in, this is not the right role. Filter for your native language to find better-matched listings.
Do I need a Master's to qualify?
This role lists a master's degree as a requirement. In practice, the domain assessment is the real gate. If you can pass it, the degree is usually secondary. However, some platforms verify credentials formally, so list your actual qualifications accurately on your profile.
Can I apply from outside Germany?
This specific role is open only to people based in Germany. If you are somewhere else, applying is unlikely to lead to an offer even if you pass the assessment, because the restriction is usually about where the work can legally be contracted rather than your skills. Read the full description for any tax-residency or right-to-work caveats before you apply.
What is the barrier to entry for Alignerr?
A difficult, timed technical assessment in your specific domain, like Python, physics, or language. Passing it is required before you're eligible for any paid projects.
