About this role

From the Alignerr listing

What You'll Do

  • Listen to German-language audio recordings and produce precise, verbatim transcriptions
  • Handle challenging audio — including crosstalk, filled pauses, heavy accents, background noise, and multiple simultaneous speakers
  • Accurately identify and distinguish between different speakers throughout recordings
  • Follow detailed style and formatting guidelines with consistency and precision
  • Apply transcription conventions for non-verbal sounds, incomplete utterances, and spoken-language phenomena
  • Maintain high quality and accuracy standards across large volumes of audio
  • Work independently and asynchronously at your own pace

About the Role

What if your sharp ears and fluent German could directly influence how AI understands spoken language across the German-speaking world? We're looking for meticulous transcriptionists in the Zurich area to produce precise, high-quality transcriptions of German-language audio — building the real-world datasets that make AI systems smarter and more natural. This is a fully remote, flexible contract role. Swiss German speakers and speakers of standard Hochdeutsch based in Zurich are both strongly encouraged to apply. No AI background needed — just native-level fluency, exceptional listening skills, and a careful, consistent approach to written German.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote (Zurich, Switzerland)
  • Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

Who You Are

  • Native or near-native fluency in German — Swiss German speakers especially welcome
  • Exceptional listening skills with the ability to parse difficult or noisy audio
  • Highly detail-oriented with a methodical, patient approach to task-based work
  • Comfortable following and consistently applying detailed style guides and formatting rules
  • Strong written standard German (Hochdeutsch) skills — spelling, punctuation, and grammar come naturally
  • Self-motivated and reliable when working independently
  • Comfortable using web-based tools and platforms

Nice to Have

  • Professional experience in transcription, court reporting, or stenography
  • Background in subtitling, closed-captioning, or media post-production
  • Linguistics training or academic background in German language studies
  • Prior experience with annotation platforms or data labeling workflows
  • Familiarity with transcription software or audio editing tools
  • Awareness of Swiss German dialect features (Zürichdeutsch and beyond) and their relationship to standard written German

Why Join Us

  • Work on cutting-edge AI projects alongside leading research labs
  • Fully remote and flexible — work when and where it suits you
  • Freelance autonomy with the structure of meaningful, task-based work
  • Contribute to AI development that directly improves how technology understands spoken German
  • Sharpen your transcription and linguistic skills on diverse, real-world audio
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch

Common questions

Does Alignerr have a trainer community?

Yes, and it's a genuine strength. Once you're assigned to a project, you join Slack channels where you can get rubric clarifications from admins and talk to other trainers. That kind of support is rare in AI training and matters most when guidelines are ambiguous or shift mid-project.

How hard is the Alignerr assessment?

Hard, and unforgiving. Alignerr uses TestGorilla for timed, role-specific tests: a blank coding environment for engineers, strict grammar and fact-checking for writers. Treat it as one shot. Failing or abandoning it typically locks you out of that role permanently, with no retake.

What equipment do I need for creative AI training roles?

For voice or audio roles at this pay level, a professional home studio setup (XLR microphone, acoustically treated room) is typically required. Phone recordings and laptop mics usually get rejected by quality control.

How is my creative work used in AI training?

As ground-truth data: for writers, that means creative generation samples; for voice actors, it often means training text-to-speech models. Check the specific contract details on rights usage for your voice or likeness before signing.

What does Languages work look like for a German Audio Transcriptionist – Zurich (AI Training)?

Tasks here are scoped to Languages, not generic labeling. As a German Audio Transcriptionist – Zurich (AI Training), expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to Languages) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on Languages background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.

What specific skills does this listing call for?

German is named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with this, expect the screening process to test for it directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.

How much does this specific role pay?

This listing is posted at $10–$35/hr, an hourly rate. The range reflects experience level and negotiated terms, not a placeholder, so where you land in it depends on your background and the assessment. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.

Do I need to be fluent in German?

Yes. This role specifically requires German proficiency, on top of the English most AI training work assumes by default. If German is not a language you're fluent in, this is not the right role. Filter for your native language to find better-matched listings.

Do I need a Master's to qualify?

This role lists a master's degree as a requirement. In practice, the domain assessment is the real gate. If you can pass it, the degree is usually secondary. However, some platforms verify credentials formally, so list your actual qualifications accurately on your profile.

Can I apply from outside Germany?

This specific role is open only to people based in Germany. If you are somewhere else, applying is unlikely to lead to an offer even if you pass the assessment, because the restriction is usually about where the work can legally be contracted rather than your skills. Read the full description for any tax-residency or right-to-work caveats before you apply.

What is the barrier to entry for Alignerr?

A difficult, timed technical assessment in your specific domain, like Python, physics, or language. Passing it is required before you're eligible for any paid projects.
