Interview Prep
Sample questions for a Calibration Technician role, written in-house to help you prepare.
How do you approach troubleshooting an instrument that's giving readings outside expected tolerance during a calibration check?
I check the simplest and most common causes first, like a connection issue or environmental factor affecting the reading, before assuming the instrument itself has drifted or failed, since ruling out the easy explanations first saves time compared to jumping straight to a full internal inspection.
What's your process for deciding whether an instrument that's slightly out of tolerance needs adjustment, repair, or replacement?
I weigh how far out of tolerance it is, how critical the instrument's accuracy is to its application, and whether the drift is a one-time occurrence or part of a recurring pattern, rather than applying the same response to every out-of-tolerance finding regardless of context or severity.
How do you make sure your calibration documentation would hold up if it were reviewed as part of a quality audit?
I record the specific measurements, the reference standard used, and environmental conditions at the time of calibration, not just a pass or fail result, since an auditor needs to see the actual evidence behind the conclusion, not just the outcome. Incomplete documentation can undermine an otherwise correctly performed calibration.
What's your approach to maintaining traceability of your reference standards back to a recognized measurement authority?
I make sure every reference standard I use has its own current calibration certificate traceable to the appropriate national or international standard, and I track expiration dates proactively rather than discovering a standard is overdue when I go to use it for a calibration.
Why this role
At $75/hr, this remote Calibration Technician role pays competitively without asking you to relocate, interview in person, or keep fixed hours in Generalist.

Common questions
Can I use Handshake if I graduated years ago?
Probably not a good fit. Handshake's AI Fellowship roles target current university students and early talent within about 1-2 years of graduation. Experienced professionals typically find faster approval and better rates on Outlier or Mercor.
Is Handshake itself the employer for AI training roles?
For the AI Fellowship roles specifically, yes, Handshake acts as the employer of record. That's different from the rest of the site, which functions as a job board listing openings for other companies.
Do task-based AI training roles require an interview?
Most skip a live interview entirely and gate access through an automated assessment or qualification task instead. Where we've confirmed the specific requirement for this listing, it's called out above in What We Know About This Role.
What does task-based AI training work look like?
Practical, hands-on data work: recording short videos, categorizing images, rating text responses, or analyzing data. Tasks are designed to be short and distinct, typically 5 to 60 minutes each.
What does Generalist work look like for a Calibration Technician?
Tasks here are scoped to Generalist, not generic labeling. As a Calibration Technician, expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to Generalist) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on Generalist background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.
What specific skills does this listing call for?
AI Training and Content Review are named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with these, expect the screening process to test for them directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.
How much does this specific role pay?
This listing is posted at $75/hr, an hourly rate. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.
What happens when I click Apply on this listing?
You'll be taken to Handshake's external site to complete your application there. This listing links through a referral, but the process is identical to applying directly; the link just routes you correctly. Create an account on their site and follow their onboarding steps.
Are Handshake AI training listings internships?
Some are, some aren't. Handshake lists both standard internships and separate "AI Trainer" fellowships. Check the job description for "1099" or "Contract" language: that signals a freelance role, not W-2 employment.
