What to Expect

Māori language evaluation tasks involve an indigenous Polynesian language of Aotearoa New Zealand that is an official national language and the subject of active revitalization. Tasks require knowledge of Māori grammar—VOS word order, the distinction between stative and active verbs, directional particles, the passive construction, and the important distinction between tāku/tōku possession marking (which encodes the relationship type between possessor and possessed). Cultural protocol knowledge matters: Māori language is inseparable from tikanga (cultural practice), and culturally inappropriate usage is an error. Tasks evaluate correct macron (tohutō) usage—macrons mark long vowels and are phonemically significant. Audio tasks involve recording in natural Māori speech. Native speaker or near-native fluency with strong cultural competency is required.
