Interview Prep

Sample questions for a UI/UX Designer role, written in-house to help you prepare.

How do you decide what user research method to use, like interviews versus surveys versus usability testing, for a given design question?

The method depends on what kind of question I'm answering. Interviews surface the why behind behavior and are good early, when I'm still forming hypotheses. Surveys validate how common a pattern is across a larger sample once I already have a hypothesis. Usability testing answers whether a specific design solution actually works, which needs a working prototype rather than abstract questions.

How do you decide how much fidelity a prototype needs to be before testing it with users?

Low-fidelity wireframes are enough for testing information architecture and flow, since users can evaluate structure without visual polish distracting them. Higher fidelity becomes necessary once I'm testing something visual details actually affect, like whether a specific button reads as clickable, since a rough sketch won't answer that question reliably.

How do you balance visual design consistency with a design system against the need for a specific screen to solve a unique problem?

I default to the design system's existing components and patterns, since consistency reduces cognitive load for users across the product. I only deviate when a genuine, well-justified need exists that the system doesn't already solve, and when I do deviate, I feed that pattern back into the system rather than leaving it as a one-off exception nobody else can reuse.

How do you interpret conflicting signals between what users say they want in an interview and what usability testing shows they actually do?

I weight behavioral data from usability testing more heavily than stated preference from interviews, since users are often inaccurate predictors of their own future behavior. Interviews are still valuable for understanding motivation and context, but when there's a direct conflict between stated preference and observed behavior, the behavior is the more reliable signal for the actual design decision.
