Role Title: Computational Mathematics Expert Role Type: Contractor Location: Remote micro1 is engaging Computational Mathematics Experts to participate in an exciting customer project at the intersection of advanced mathematics, AI, and software engineering. In this role, you'll apply your expertise to help train next-generation AI systems. Your work will shape how models learn, reason, and perform through high-quality, real-world input. No prior experience in AI is required — your domain knowledge is what matters. We are particularly interested in professionals who seamlessly integrate AI coding agents—such as Codex, Claude Science, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork—into their technical workflows, especially for generating and refining code sequences (not simply chat-based tasks). Scope of Work
- Deliver detailed, real-world examples of utilizing AI coding agents (Codex, Claude Science, Claude Code, Claude Cowork) for computational mathematics projects.
- Describe and document workflows where AI agents have been leveraged for complex technical problem-solving—such as navigating extensive codebases, debugging sophisticated issues, implementing end-to-end features, or conducting architectural changes.
- Provide high-quality written and verbal explanations of challenges, project objectives, and the specific roles AI agents played in achieving results.
- Evaluate and articulate the effectiveness of different AI agent tools for solving ambiguous or open-ended mathematical or coding problems.
- Submit concise reports highlighting project complexity, problem context, and decision-making processes powered by AI agents.
- Contribute feedback on the practical integration and limitations of AI tools within computational mathematics domains.
- Participate in remote consultations or knowledge-sharing sessions when needed. Preferred Qualifications
- Current STEM professional with hands-on experience in computational mathematics and AI-driven coding workflows.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Codex, Claude Science, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork, with a focus on using these tools to generate actionable code sequences.
- Proven ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively in both written and verbal formats.
- Track record of applying AI agents to advanced tasks—such as debugging, architectural modification, or handling large, ambiguous problem sets.
- Experience working remotely and managing deliverables independently.
- Ability to analyze, document, and reflect on the value and boundaries of AI agent usage in technical settings.
- Enthusiasm for advancing the practical adoption of AI within computational mathematics.
Requirements
- computational mathematics
- python
- ai coding agents (codex, claude science, claude code, claude cowork)
- technical documentation
- complex problem solving
- remote work management
- written and verbal communication

Why this role
The Computational Mathematics Expert role at micro1 pays $80-$100 per hour for mathematicians who use Python alongside AI coding agents like Codex and Claude Code to solve complex computational problems. The project sits at the intersection of advanced mathematics, AI and software engineering, so debugging complex codebases is part of the daily work. This role suits mathematicians already comfortable pairing formal math with AI-assisted coding tools.

Common questions
Can I apply to Micro1 from outside the US or UK?
Yes. Micro1 accepts applicants from most countries worldwide, unlike DataAnnotation or Outlier, both of which cap access to a handful of English-speaking countries. Most roles still require strong written and spoken English.
Does Micro1 monitor your computer while you work?
On many projects, yes, through time-tracking tools that take periodic screenshots to verify active hours. Check the specific project's requirements before accepting if desktop monitoring is a dealbreaker.
What does asynchronous AI training work mean in practice?
No set hours, no check-ins, no meetings. You log in when you want, pick up an available task, complete it, and submit; nobody is waiting on you in real time. That's different from remote employment, where you're expected online during business hours. The tradeoff: you're competing with others for available tasks, so an empty queue means there's simply nothing to do until more work is released.
What does Mathematics work look like for a Computational Mathematics Expert?
Tasks here are scoped to Mathematics, not generic labeling. As a Computational Mathematics Expert, expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to Mathematics) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on Mathematics background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.
What specific skills does this listing call for?
computational mathematics, python, ai coding agents (codex, claude science, claude code, claude cowork), and technical documentation are named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with these, expect the screening process to test for them directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.
What does the 'openings' count on this listing mean?
It's Micro1's live count of how many candidates it's still trying to place for this specific role, 1 right now, not a countdown on your individual application. A higher number signals more active demand; it doesn't lower the bar for acceptance.
How much does this specific role pay?
This listing is posted at $80–$100/hr, an hourly rate. The range reflects experience level and negotiated terms, not a placeholder, so where you land in it depends on your background and the assessment. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.
What happens when I click Apply on this listing?
You'll be taken to Micro1's external site to complete your application there. This listing links through a referral, but the process is identical to applying directly; the link just routes you correctly. Create an account on their site and follow their onboarding steps.
