Role Title: Photographer

Role Type: Contractor

Location: Northern America, Latin America, Europe, UK, Oceania.

micro1 is engaging Photographers to contribute their expertise to a video annotation project for a customer. In this role, you'll apply your expertise to help train next-generation AI systems. Your work will shape how models learn, reason, and perform through high-quality, real-world input. No prior experience in AI is required — your domain knowledge is what matters.

Scope of Work

  • Review video footage of robotic arms performing a variety of tasks, ensuring careful observation of each session.
  • Apply detailed video annotation and data labeling skills to tag and categorize footage according to specific grading guidelines provided by the project.
  • Evaluate visual and photographic quality within the videos, applying photography principles to judge image clarity, composition, and relevance.
  • Spot and document visual nuances, discrepancies, or issues in robot task execution, maintaining strict attention to detail at all times.
  • Follow established project protocols and grading rules consistently for all assigned sessions to ensure exceptional data uniformity and reliability.
  • Submit clear, accurate annotations and written observations through project tools and workflows.
  • Collaborate asynchronously with trainers and project coordinators as needed to clarify guidelines or improve annotation quality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional background in photography, with a keen eye for visual composition and technical image evaluation.
  • Demonstrated experience in video annotation, data labeling, or related AI training projects, ideally involving robotics or technical footage.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and an ability to spot subtle visual cues in dynamic environments.
  • Strong adherence to complex guidelines and repetitive processes without sacrificing accuracy or quality.
  • Experience using annotation platforms or visual data tools is highly desirable.
  • Comfort working independently and managing deliverables in a remote, asynchronous project setting.
  • Background knowledge in machine learning, robotics, or AI annotation projects is a plus but not required.

Requirements

  • Video Annotation
  • Data Labeling
  • Attention to detail
  • Spotting Visual Details in Footage
  • Photography Knowledge Applied to Judging Images
  • Following Rules the Same Way Every Time
  • Must be eligible to work in one of: Remote, United Kingdom

Interview Prep

Sample questions for a Photographer role, written in-house to help you prepare.

How do you approach composing a shot when the environment or subject doesn't lend itself to a clean, standard composition?

I look for what's actually strong about the scene, whether that's a leading line, interesting framing, or an unconventional angle, rather than forcing a standard composition rule onto a scene that doesn't naturally fit it. Sometimes the more interesting shot comes from working with the environment's quirks rather than fighting them.

What's your process for adapting your lighting approach when shooting in a location with poor or unpredictable natural light?

I assess what light is actually available and where it's strongest before deciding whether it's usable or needs to be supplemented, rather than defaulting to the same lighting setup regardless of conditions. I carry portable lighting options specifically for situations where I know natural light will likely be inadequate.

How do you balance your creative vision for a shoot against a client's specific requirements or expectations?

I try to understand what the client actually needs the images for, since that context often reveals room for creative choices that still serve their practical goal, rather than treating creative vision and client requirements as inherently opposed. I present options when there's genuine creative latitude rather than assuming they want exactly what I'd choose independently.

What's your approach to reviewing and selecting images from a shoot when you have far more usable shots than you need?

I evaluate against the actual purpose of the shoot, whether that's telling a specific story or capturing a specific moment, rather than selecting purely on technical quality, since a technically perfect shot that doesn't serve the purpose is less valuable than a slightly imperfect one that does. I try to get distance from the shoot before doing final selection so I'm not overly attached to a shot just because it was hard to get.

Common questions

Does Micro1 monitor your computer while you work?

On many projects, yes, through time-tracking tools that take periodic screenshots to verify active hours. Check the specific project's requirements before accepting if desktop monitoring is a dealbreaker.

What does asynchronous AI training work mean in practice?

No set hours, no check-ins, no meetings. You log in when you want, pick up an available task, complete it, and submit; nobody is waiting on you in real time. That's different from remote employment, where you're expected online during business hours. The tradeoff: you're competing with others for available tasks, so an empty queue means there's simply nothing to do until more work is released.

What does Data Science work look like for a Photographer?

Tasks here are scoped to Data Science, not generic labeling. As a Photographer, expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to Data Science) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on Data Science background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.

What specific skills does this listing call for?

Video Annotation, Data Labeling, Attention to detail, and Spotting Visual Details in Footage are named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with these, expect the screening process to test for them directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.

What does the 'openings' count on this listing mean?

It's Micro1's live count of how many candidates it's still trying to place for this specific role, 250 right now, not a countdown on your individual application. A higher number signals more active demand; it doesn't lower the bar for acceptance.

How much does this specific role pay?

This listing is posted at $50–$90/hr, an hourly rate. The range reflects experience level and negotiated terms, not a placeholder, so where you land in it depends on your background and the assessment. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.

Do I need to be fluent in Latin America?

Yes. This role specifically requires Latin America proficiency, on top of the English most AI training work assumes by default. If Latin America is not a language you're fluent in, this is not the right role. Filter for your native language to find better-matched listings.

What happens when I click Apply on this listing?

You'll be taken to Micro1's external site to complete your application there. This listing links through a referral, but the process is identical to applying directly; the link just routes you correctly. Create an account on their site and follow their onboarding steps.

Do I need a Master's to qualify?

This role lists a master's degree as a requirement. In practice, the domain assessment is the real gate. If you can pass it, the degree is usually secondary. However, some platforms verify credentials formally, so list your actual qualifications accurately on your profile.

Can I apply from outside the United Kingdom?

This specific role is open only to people based in the United Kingdom. If you are somewhere else, applying is unlikely to lead to an offer even if you pass the assessment, because the restriction is usually about where the work can legally be contracted rather than your skills. Read the full description for any tax-residency or right-to-work caveats before you apply.
