About this role

From the Micro1 listing

Role Title: VFX Artist / 3D Animator (AI Video Annotation) Role Type: Contractor, Remote Location: North America, Latin America, Europe, UK, and Oceania micro1 is engaging VFX Artists and 3D Animators for a project focused on reviewing and annotating video sessions of robotic arms completing real-world tasks. This is an AI training and video annotation project rather than a traditional asset creation, animation, or rendering assignment. Your understanding of motion, spatial relationships, object tracking, occlusion, and visual anomalies is highly valuable for interpreting robotic activity. You will use that expertise to identify what objects are doing, how they move and interact, and whether each task is completed correctly. Your work will help create precise, consistent training data for next-generation AI systems. No prior experience in AI, robotics, or data annotation is required.

Scope of Work

  • Review video footage of robotic arms performing tasks, following detailed annotation and grading guidelines provided by the customer.
  • Identify and label motion, object interactions, spatial changes, task outcomes, errors, and other relevant events within each video segment.
  • Apply your understanding of animation, transforms, trajectories, timing, occlusion, and physical behavior to interpret activity accurately.
  • Use dedicated annotation tools to tag video content precisely and consistently.
  • Flag visual anomalies, tracking challenges, or ambiguous moments and explain your observations in concise written notes.
  • Contribute to quality control by reviewing annotations and providing constructive feedback when requested.
  • Complete assigned batches accurately and within established deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional or academic background in visual effects, 3D animation, motion graphics, technical art, computer graphics, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of motion, timing, spatial relationships, object tracking, occlusion, and visual continuity.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Blender, Maya, Houdini, Cinema 4D, Nuke, After Effects, or similar software.
  • Excellent attention to detail, particularly when identifying subtle motion changes, visual artifacts, or inconsistencies.
  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to describe visual observations and edge cases clearly.
  • Experience with video annotation, visual QA, computer vision datasets, AI training projects, or robotics is helpful but not required.

Common questions

Does Micro1 monitor your computer while you work?

On many projects, yes, through time-tracking tools that take periodic screenshots to verify active hours. Check the specific project's requirements before accepting if desktop monitoring is a dealbreaker.

How is my creative work used in AI training?

As ground-truth data: for writers, that means creative generation samples; for voice actors, it often means training text-to-speech models. Check the specific contract details on rights usage for your voice or likeness before signing.

Do creative AI training roles allow creative freedom?

Some, within limits. You're hired for your talent, but most projects still require following strict style guides, like keeping a neutral tone or matching a technical-manual style. Consistency across the dataset matters more than personal expression here.

What does Generalist work look like for a VFX Artist / 3D Animator?

Tasks here are scoped to Generalist, not generic labeling. As a VFX Artist / 3D Animator, expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to Generalist) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on Generalist background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.

What specific skills does this listing call for?

VFX, 3D Animation, Video Annotation, and Analytical Skills are named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with these, expect the screening process to test for them directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.

What does the 'openings' count on this listing mean?

It's Micro1's live count of how many candidates it's still trying to place for this specific role, 250 right now, not a countdown on your individual application. A higher number signals more active demand; it doesn't lower the bar for acceptance.

How much does this specific role pay?

This listing is posted at $50–$90/hr, an hourly rate. The range reflects experience level and negotiated terms, not a placeholder, so where you land in it depends on your background and the assessment. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.

Do I need to be fluent in Latin America?

Yes. This role specifically requires Latin America proficiency, on top of the English most AI training work assumes by default. If Latin America is not a language you're fluent in, this is not the right role. Filter for your native language to find better-matched listings.

What happens when I click Apply on this listing?

You'll be taken to Micro1's external site to complete your application there. This listing links through a referral, but the process is identical to applying directly; the link just routes you correctly. Create an account on their site and follow their onboarding steps.

Can I apply from outside the United Kingdom?

This specific role is open only to people based in the United Kingdom. If you are somewhere else, applying is unlikely to lead to an offer even if you pass the assessment, because the restriction is usually about where the work can legally be contracted rather than your skills. Read the full description for any tax-residency or right-to-work caveats before you apply.
