About this role

From the SME Careers listing

As an iOS Engineer (Swift / Objective-C), you will work remotely on an hourly paid basis to review AI-generated iOS code, mobile architectures, and technical explanations, as well as produce high-quality reference implementations and step-by-step reasoning for complex engineering problems. You will assess solutions for correctness, clarity, security, performance, reliability, and adherence to the prompt; identify issues in UIKit/SwiftUI implementation, concurrency, memory management, threading, app lifecycle, networking, persistence, and build/release practices; fact-check technical information; write high-quality explanations and model solutions that demonstrate best practices; and rate and compare multiple AI responses based on correctness and reasoning quality.

This fully remote, hourly paid contractor role is with SME Careers, a fast-growing AI data services company and subsidiary of SuperAnnotate that provides AI training data to many of the world’s largest AI companies and foundation model labs—where your frontend expertise will directly help improve the world’s premier AI models used by millions of developers worldwide.

Important: There is no immediate project for this role; however, if qualified, you will be among the first experts we reach out to when relevant opportunities arise. This will also provide you with access to future projects available through our expert network.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop AI Training Content: Create detailed prompts across iOS topics and write high-quality reference answers to guide AI learning.
  • Optimize AI Performance: Evaluate and rank AI responses to enhance correctness, security, performance, and maintainability.
  • Ensure Model Integrity: Test AI outputs for inaccuracies or unsafe recommendations, validating reliability across real-world iOS use cases.

Your profile

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 4+ years of professional experience building production iOS applications, including work in Swift and (ideally) Objective-C codebases.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Swift (Swift 5+): value/reference semantics, generics, protocols, error handling, and modern language features.
  • Strong iOS fundamentals: app lifecycle, view/controller architecture, navigation, state management, and background execution constraints.
  • Solid concurrency experience: GCD, OperationQueue, and modern async/await patterns; ability to reason about race conditions and thread-safety.
  • Strong understanding of ARC and iOS memory patterns (retain cycles, weak/unowned, leaks, Instruments).
  • Experience with networking and data: URLSession, JSON parsing, caching, retries, offline strategies, and persistence (Core Data/SQLite/Realm).
  • Experience with testing and quality: XCTest, UI testing, mocking strategies, CI/CD (Fastlane is a plus), and App Store release hygiene.
  • Security awareness: secure storage (Keychain), transport security, auth flows, privacy permissions, and sensitive data handling.
  • Minimum C1 English proficiency (written and spoken), with the ability to write clear technical explanations and follow detailed English-language guidelines.
  • Previous experience with AI data training, annotation, or evaluating AI-generated technical content is a strong plus.
  • Highly detail-oriented and systematic, with a methodical approach to evaluating reasoning quality and identifying subtle issues in complex iOS code.

🌍 Geographic Availability This role is available to qualified experts globally. However, as a U.S.-based company, SME Careers complies with U.S. export control and sanctions regulations. Eligibility depends on your country of residence and any applicable trade restrictions. Some projects may have additional language or region-specific requirements.

💰 Pay Rate May Vary Based on Your Location Your actual compensation will be determined based on your location and local market conditions. See regional job listings for localized pay information, or the application process will clarify your specific rate.

If you're unsure whether you're eligible, proceed with the application—SME's screening will determine your jurisdiction status and applicable compensation.

Why this role

At $110/hr, this iOS Engineer role pays roughly double the standalone Swift Engineer position, reflecting the added requirement of Objective-C experience on top of modern Swift. SME Careers wants four or more years building production iOS apps across both languages, with strong grounding in app lifecycle and state management. Engineers who maintain older Objective-C codebases alongside newer Swift ones are exactly who this rate is built for.

Common questions

How does SME Careers pay freelancers?

Weekly, through Deel. Deel also handles tax compliance, which is how SME Careers pays contractors across more than 40 countries without running its own international payroll.

Is SME Careers work ongoing or project-based?

Project-based. Assignment duration and availability vary by project, but consistently high-quality work earns priority access to whatever comes next.

What does the day-to-day workload look like for elite-expert AI training roles?

Slow and deep, not fast and repetitive. A single task can take 45-60 minutes of researching citations or verifying complex calculations. Quality is what's being measured here, not throughput.

Is AI training work the same as traditional consulting?

No. Instead of client deliverables, you're given complex scenarios to evaluate: grading the AI's logic, correcting its hallucinations, and supplying expert-level reasoning it doesn't have on its own. The job is closer to teaching than consulting.

What does Software Engineering work look like for an iOS Engineer (Swift and Objective-C)?

Tasks here are scoped to Software Engineering, not generic labeling. As an iOS Engineer (Swift and Objective-C), expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to Software Engineering) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on Software Engineering background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.

What specific skills does this listing call for?

Networking, Performance Optimization, Concurrency (GCD/async-await), and Objective-C are named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with these, expect the screening process to test for them directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.

How much does this specific role pay?

This listing is posted at $110/hr, a per-task rate. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.

What happens when I click Apply on this listing?

You'll be taken to SME Careers's external site to complete your application there. This listing links through a referral, but the process is identical to applying directly; the link just routes you correctly. Create an account on their site and follow their onboarding steps.

Who is behind SME Careers?

SME Careers is the expert talent division of SuperAnnotate, an AI data infrastructure platform, connecting domain experts with high-level AI training projects.
