About this role

From the SME Careers listing

In this hourly, remote contractor role, you will work as a Legal & Compliance Subject Matter Expert (SME) to create challenging professional questions, evaluate AI-generated legal and regulatory content, and design high-quality rubrics defining what a complete, well-reasoned, and professionally appropriate response should contain.

You will develop tasks involving legal analysis, regulatory interpretation, compliance, issue spotting, risk assessment, policy interpretation, contracts, privacy, financial regulation, employment matters, corporate compliance, or related fields depending on your specialization.

You will evaluate whether AI-generated responses identify relevant issues, apply appropriate rules or standards, recognize exceptions, distinguish facts from assumptions, address relevant risks, and avoid unsupported conclusions.

A major component of this role is rubric writing and evaluation design. You will translate nuanced legal or regulatory judgment into structured criteria covering issue identification, applicable standards, analysis quality, completeness, exceptions, jurisdictional considerations, risk, and professional reasoning.

This role is with SME Careers, a fast-growing AI Data Services company and subsidiary of SuperAnnotate, delivering training data for many of the world’s largest AI companies and foundation-model labs. Your expertise directly helps improve the world’s premier AI models by making their legal and compliance outputs more accurate, rigorous, and professionally reliable.

Key responsibilities

  • Create legal and compliance tasks: Develop realistic, difficult scenarios requiring expert analysis and professional judgment.
  • Design detailed rubrics: Define relevant issues, rules, standards, analytical steps, exceptions, risks, and critical errors.
  • Evaluate AI-generated analysis: Assess responses for accuracy, completeness, reasoning quality, relevance, and professional rigor.
  • Review issue spotting: Determine whether the model identifies the material legal or regulatory considerations.
  • Assess reasoning quality: Identify unsupported conclusions, incorrect application of rules, missing exceptions, and faulty assumptions.
  • Critique peer rubrics: Review rubrics for missing issues, ambiguity, redundancy, excessive subjectivity, or inaccurate legal expectations.
  • Develop reference content: Create high-quality analyses, answer frameworks, critiques, and gold-standard examples.
  • Support AI training: Produce questions, rubrics, evaluations, preference data, and reference-answer pairs for RL and SFT workflows.
  • Maintain professional quality: Ensure content appropriately distinguishes factual analysis, legal interpretation, professional judgment, and uncertainty.

Your profile

  • JD, LLB, LLM, law degree, compliance qualification, or equivalent professional background relevant to the stated specialty.
  • Professional legal qualification or bar admission is strongly preferred for attorney-focused roles.
  • Strong professional proficiency in English, minimum C1.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in law, regulatory compliance, legal research, policy, risk, privacy, financial compliance, contracts, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in a clearly defined legal, regulatory, or compliance domain.
  • Ability to create challenging professional scenarios requiring issue spotting, interpretation, analysis, and judgment.
  • Strong ability to design rubrics defining required issues, applicable standards, reasoning steps, relevant exceptions, risks, and critical omissions.
  • Ability to distinguish between legitimate alternative legal interpretations and objectively deficient analysis.
  • Comfortable reviewing and critiquing rubrics developed by other legal or compliance experts.
  • Strong attention to detail when evaluating terminology, factual assumptions, jurisdiction, authority, exceptions, materiality, and conclusions.
  • Experience with legal education, examination writing, peer review, legal editing, quality assurance, policy drafting, compliance testing, or supervisory review is strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience with AI evaluation, legal AI, data annotation, RLHF, model benchmarking, or rubric-based scoring is preferred.

Common questions

Is SME Careers work ongoing or project-based?

Project-based. Assignment duration and availability vary by project, but consistently high-quality work earns priority access to whatever comes next.

Does SME Careers offer a path for advancement?

Yes. SME Careers is unusual among AI training platforms for this: it publishes an explicit career ladder, Data Trainer, then Quality Analyst, then QA Lead, then Project Manager. Consistent, high-quality work is what moves you up it.

Is AI training work the same as traditional consulting?

No. Instead of client deliverables, you're given complex scenarios to evaluate: grading the AI's logic, correcting its hallucinations, and supplying expert-level reasoning it doesn't have on its own. The job is closer to teaching than consulting.

Why do these AI training roles pay so much?

Because general knowledge isn't what's being tested. The model already knows the basics; what it needs is expertise on edge cases, the rare, difficult, highly technical judgment calls only a senior professional in the field would make correctly.

What does Legal work look like for a Legal & Compliance Specialist?

Tasks here are scoped to Legal, not generic labeling. As a Legal & Compliance Specialist, expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to Legal) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on Legal background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.

What specific skills does this listing call for?

Law, Legal Analysis, Compliance, and Regulatory Compliance are named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with these, expect the screening process to test for them directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.

How much does this specific role pay?

This listing is posted at $120/hr, a per-task rate. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.

What happens when I click Apply on this listing?

You'll be taken to SME Careers's external site to complete your application there. This listing links through a referral, but the process is identical to applying directly; the link just routes you correctly. Create an account on their site and follow their onboarding steps.

Who is behind SME Careers?

SME Careers is the expert talent division of SuperAnnotate, an AI data infrastructure platform, connecting domain experts with high-level AI training projects.
