About this Role
We are looking for a Director of Engineering (Product) with 5+ years of engineering experience and 2-3+ years of multi-team management experience to lead and scale multiple product squads at a fast-growing edtech company transforming how schools build schedules for teachers and students. You'll report directly to the CTO and co-founder, taking ownership of the product engineering organization as Timely enters its next phase of growth, serving half a million students across 20+ states.
What you need
- 2-3+ years managing multiple engineering teams (6+ engineers), ideally with experience scaling teams and managing other managers
- Hands-on technical ability, must be able to read, review, and write code; not a pure people manager
- Strong backend architecture experience with the ability to ramp on new stacks (current stack: React, TypeScript, Python, AWS, MongoDB)
- Startup or high-growth environment experience, comfortable with ambiguity, able to independently prioritize and drive work without heavy support structures
- Strong communication skills with the ability to connect technical decisions to business outcomes and drive cross-functional alignment
What will you be doing?
Taking direct ownership of multiple product squads (scheduler experience, visibility/reporting, and elementary school), managing engineers and driving delivery across all of them
Being hands-on early, contributing code, doing code reviews, and pairing with engineers (~50/50 initially, shifting to 80/20 leadership over time)
Making and landing key technical architecture decisions to ensure the platform is robust and scalable for the next two years of growth
Partnering with Product, School Success, and other cross-functional stakeholders to define squad goals and align engineering priorities to business outcomes
Shipping high-value product features ahead of the March, August scheduling season, including advancing AI-powered capabilities
