What you'll do
- Own the entire backend, APIs, table design, permissions, PHI boundaries, backups, staging, observability, and deploys. Make adding a feature boring and safe.
- Build and operate a real-time drug pricing system that pulls prices from multiple sources every few minutes and routes each claim to the cheapest option, essentially a trading system.
- Manage eligibility and claims flowing in and out of the adjudication engine, where failure means someone at a pharmacy counter doesn't get their medication.
- Architect and build Kanurra's own claims adjudication engine, shadow-running it against the rented system on replayed real claims until it matches exactly.
- Own the payments infrastructure, brokers paying Kanurra, Kanurra paying pharmacies, with 99.99% uptime requirements moving millions of dollars.
- Make foundational architecture and schema decisions that determine how the platform scales as member count grows from hundreds to tens of thousands and beyond.
What you need
- We need a backend-leaning engineer with 3+ years of experience who has owned production systems where being wrong cost real money, payments, ledgers, trading, or critical infrastructure. You should be comfortable operating as the sole engineer at an early-stage startup, making architecture decisions that will scale from hundreds to tens of thousands of users, and pushing back on a strong-opinioned technical founder. Bonus points if you've worked at a top-tier fintech startup like Stripe, Ramp, Column, Plaid, or Square.
