About this Role
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with 4+ years of experience to join our Optimizer team and help build and evolve the core AI-powered scheduling technology that serves half a million students across 20+ states. You'll work at the intersection of mathematical optimization, machine learning, and full-stack engineering, tackling one of the hardest combinatorial problems in education alongside a small, exceptional team led by a former senior Google engineer with a PhD in math.
What you need
- 4+ years of software engineering experience with a track record of shipping production software and leading complex technical efforts, not just executing tasks
- Depth in at least one of: linear optimization / mathematical programming, production ML systems, or backend API / infrastructure development, with strong interest and ability to learn the others
- Experience owning or building a mission-critical algorithm, ML model, or optimization module for a key product area (not just data pipelines or logging systems)
- High ownership mentality, comfortable being on-call, unblocking yourself across the stack (Python, AWS/Terraform, frontend), and diving deep into a complex domain quickly
- Strong communication skills and comfort interfacing with non-technical stakeholders; someone who thinks about product and domain, not just code
What will you be doing?
Building and extending Timely's core optimization engine, a mixed integer / linear programming model, along with the backend systems and infrastructure surrounding it
Exploring and implementing machine learning and AI approaches to improve scheduling accuracy, speed, and user accessibility
Working across the stack (~80% backend, ~20% frontend) to help users interact with optimization technology more directly and independently
Owning mission-critical systems end-to-end: on-call support, troubleshooting customer issues, and collaborating closely with the non-technical school success team
Leading complex technical projects and providing technical leadership within the squad, with a path toward a tech lead role as you grow
