About this role

From the AfterQuery listing

We are hiring experienced software engineers to design long-horizon coding tasks: realistic, investigation-heavy engineering problems drawn from substantial codebases, used to evaluate and train advanced AI coding agents. The ideal candidate is comfortable working across large multi-file codebases, reasoning about how a bug or feature ripples across modules, and building reproducible, containerized environments backed by rigorous tests. You should be able to author a problem a strong engineer would recognize as real work, and a verifier that grades a solution the way a careful reviewer would. Experience with Docker and containerized workflows is required. You will also need a substantial private codebase of your own to author tasks against.

### Responsibilities
- Author long-horizon coding tasks grounded in real engineering problems (bugs, features, regressions, migrations) from substantial codebases.
- Write clear prompts that require genuine investigation and complicated execution by a coding agent.
- Build deterministic test suites and review criteria that verify correctness, catch regressions, and resist shortcut or "reward-hacking" solutions.
- Containerize tasks with Docker so they build and run reproducibly.

### Required Qualifications
- Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (e.g., JavaScript/TypeScript, Java, Go, Rust, C/C++, Python, etc.).
- Experience architecting or maintaining substantial, complex, and large software projects.
- Hands-on experience with Docker or similar containerization tools.
- Strong technical writing, documentation, and testing skills.
- Access to a large, complex, and private codebase you own and can author tasks against.
- Experience using coding agents for long tasks.

### Preferred Qualifications
- Background in code review, test authoring, or maintaining production and/or open-source systems.
- Exposure to AI evaluation, rubric/data grading, or prompt writing.

  • Strong technical writing, documentation, and testing skills.
  • Access to a large, complex, and private codebase you own and can author tasks against.

  • Must be eligible to work in Remote

Why this role

At $85/hr, this Advanced Coding Expert position compensates Software Engineering expertise on its own terms, the kind of rate that would otherwise only show up inside a law firm, hospital, or research lab.

Common questions

Do I need a PhD to qualify for AfterQuery?

Only for specialist roles: ML research, atmospheric modeling, bioinformatics, COBOL, and audit accounting positions require verifiable credentials, usually a PhD, master's degree, or 5+ years of professional experience. AfterQuery's domain screeners check credentials before confirming an assignment, so listing a degree without the matching experience won't get you through. Generalist reviewer roles have a lower bar but come up less often.

How long do AfterQuery projects last?

Typically 2 to 3 weeks at 10 to 20 hours a week. There's no guaranteed follow-on work once a project closes, so treat it as a high-pay burst contract rather than steady income. AfterQuery does re-hire specialists for new campaigns, but that depends entirely on what AI labs are training at the time.

What does asynchronous AI training work mean in practice?

No set hours, no check-ins, no meetings. You log in when you want, pick up an available task, complete it, and submit; nobody is waiting on you in real time. That's different from remote employment, where you're expected online during business hours. The tradeoff: you're competing with others for available tasks, so an empty queue means there's simply nothing to do until more work is released.

Do task-based AI training roles require an interview?

Most skip a live interview entirely and gate access through an automated assessment or qualification task instead. Where we've confirmed the specific requirement for this listing, it's called out above in What We Know About This Role.

What does Software Engineering work look like for an Advanced Coding Expert?

Tasks here are scoped to Software Engineering, not generic labeling. As an Advanced Coding Expert, expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to Software Engineering) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on Software Engineering background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.

What specific skills does this listing call for?

Coding, Java, and Python are named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with these, expect the screening process to test for them directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.

How much does this specific role pay?

This listing is posted at $85/hr, an hourly rate. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.

What happens when I click Apply on this listing?

You'll be taken to Afterquery's external site to complete your application there. This listing links through a referral, but the process is identical to applying directly; the link just routes you correctly. Create an account on their site and follow their onboarding steps.
