What You'll Do
- Listen to audio recordings in Italian — including conversations, interviews, meetings, and other real-world speech — and produce precise, verbatim transcriptions
- Accurately capture crosstalk, overlapping speakers, filled pauses (e.g., "ehm", "cioè"), false starts, and other natural speech phenomena
- Identify and distinguish between multiple speakers throughout recordings
- Handle challenging audio conditions including background noise, low-quality recordings, and varying accents or dialects
- Follow detailed transcription style guides and formatting conventions with strict consistency
- Apply timestamps, speaker labels, and annotation tags as required by project guidelines
- Flag unclear or inaudible segments following established protocols
- Complete task-based assignments independently on your own schedule
About the Role
What if your ability to catch every word, pause, and nuance in spoken Italian could directly shape how AI understands one of the world's most beautiful languages? We're looking for detail-oriented Italian transcriptionists — including Toronto's large and culturally rich Italian-speaking community — to produce accurate, high-quality transcriptions of spoken audio, helping train the next generation of AI speech and language systems. This is real, meaningful work that requires genuine listening skill. You'll encounter natural conversation with all its messiness — crosstalk, background noise, filled pauses, multiple speakers, and rapid-fire dialogue. If you can hear through the chaos and put it on the page with precision, this role is for you. This is a fully remote, flexible contract role. No AI background needed — just native-level Italian, excellent listening skills, and the discipline to follow detailed style and formatting guidelines.
- Organization: Alignerr
- Type: Hourly Contract
- Location: Remote
- Commitment: 10–40 hours/week
Who You Are
- Native or near-native fluency in Italian — you understand spoken Italian across registers, speeds, and regional variations
- Exceptional listening skills with a genuine ear for nuance and detail
- Comfortable transcribing messy, real-world audio — not just clean studio recordings
- Highly detail-oriented with a consistent, methodical approach to your work
- Able to follow complex style and formatting guidelines precisely and apply them reliably across large volumes of work
- Strong written Italian skills with excellent spelling, grammar, and punctuation
- Self-motivated and reliable when working independently
- Comfortable using web-based tools and platforms
Nice to Have
- Prior experience as a transcriptionist, court reporter, or stenographer
- Background in subtitle creation, closed-captioning, or post-production editing
- Experience with linguistics, phonetics, or language documentation
- Familiarity with annotation or data labeling platforms
- Knowledge of Italian regional dialects and informal registers
- Background in translation, localization, or language services
- Experience working with detailed style guides in any professional context

Common questions
How soon can I start earning on Alignerr after passing the assessment?
Not right away. After passing, you still complete identity verification through Persona and billing setup through Deel, then wait in a pool for weeks or months. You only start earning once a project matching your specific skills launches and assigns you. Don't count on Alignerr income until you're actively placed on a project.
Does Alignerr have a trainer community?
Yes, and it's a genuine strength. Once you're assigned to a project, you join Slack channels where you can get rubric clarifications from admins and talk to other trainers. That kind of support is rare in AI training and matters most when guidelines are ambiguous or shift mid-project.
Do creative AI training roles allow creative freedom?
Some, within limits. You're hired for your talent, but most projects still require following strict style guides, like keeping a neutral tone or matching a technical-manual style. Consistency across the dataset matters more than personal expression here.
What equipment do I need for creative AI training roles?
For voice or audio roles at this pay level, a professional home studio setup (XLR microphone, acoustically treated room) is typically required. Phone recordings and laptop mics usually get rejected by quality control.
What does Languages work look like for an Italian Audio Transcriptionist (AI Training) — Remote?
Tasks here are scoped to Languages, not generic labeling. As an Italian Audio Transcriptionist (AI Training) — Remote, expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to Languages) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on Languages background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.
What specific skills does this listing call for?
Italian is named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with this, expect the screening process to test for it directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.
How much does this specific role pay?
This listing is posted at $10–$35/hr, an hourly rate. The range reflects experience level and negotiated terms, not a placeholder, so where you land in it depends on your background and the assessment. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.
Do I need to be fluent in Italian?
Yes. This role specifically requires Italian proficiency, on top of the English most AI training work assumes by default. If Italian is not a language you're fluent in, this is not the right role. Filter for your native language to find better-matched listings.
Do I need a Master's to qualify?
This role lists a master's degree as a requirement. In practice, the domain assessment is the real gate. If you can pass it, the degree is usually secondary. However, some platforms verify credentials formally, so list your actual qualifications accurately on your profile.
Can I apply from outside Italy?
This specific role is open only to people based in Italy. If you are somewhere else, applying is unlikely to lead to an offer even if you pass the assessment, because the restriction is usually about where the work can legally be contracted rather than your skills. Read the full description for any tax-residency or right-to-work caveats before you apply.
What is the barrier to entry for Alignerr?
A difficult, timed technical assessment in your specific domain, like Python, physics, or language. Passing it is required before you're eligible for any paid projects.
