About this role

From the Mercor listing

Help make the next generation of AI-narrated audiobooks sound genuinely human.

1. Overview

We're building a team of native French speakers who love audiobooks to help evaluate AI-narrated (text-to-speech) audiobooks in French (France). You'll listen the way a real audiobook fan does — but with a careful, analytical ear — and flag the moments where the narration slips, so the underlying models can be made better.

This is remote, part-time work at roughly 20 hours per week (about 4 hours per day). You can be based anywhere, though we prefer people living in a region where French is natively spoken.

2. What You'll Do

  • Listen to AI-narrated audiobooks in French and assess how natural, accurate, and enjoyable the narration is.
  • Spot and log errors in the synthesized speech — skipped, added, or mispronounced words; numbers read incorrectly; abbreviations expanded wrongly; unnatural phrasing or intonation; audio glitches and artifacts.
  • Categorize each issue and mark the exact span where it occurs, using our review tooling.
  • Report on overall listener satisfaction and where the narration feels natural versus where it breaks the experience.
  • Work consistently and carefully across many hours of audio without losing attention to detail.

3. Who We're Looking For

  • Native or near-native fluency in French (France), and an active, genuine audiobook listener — someone who listens regularly and has real opinions about what makes a good listen.
  • Enough working English to report clearly and communicate with the team (you do not need to be bilingual).
  • Some experience with annotation, labeling, transcription, proofreading, linguistics, or other detail-oriented review work.
  • A sharp, patient ear and the discipline to stay accurate over long listening sessions.
  • Reliable availability of about 20 hours per week on a part-time basis.

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience on AI training-data, model-evaluation, or audio/QA annotation projects.
  • A background in language, editing, voice, or audio production.

Requirements

  • Must be eligible to work in one of: Remote, France
  • Fluent proficiency in English (Written & Verbal)
  • Reliable high-speed internet connection

Common questions

Is Mercor for freelancers or full-time contractors?

Mercor places you with one client for a defined engagement, like 'Python Tutor for 3 months', rather than having you grab small tasks from a shared queue. Most roles function as steady contract work, not one-off gigs.

Does Mercor's application require an on-camera interview?

Yes, every applicant records a video interview with an AI interviewer that asks questions about your resume. Clients review that recording to judge communication skills before matching, so there's no way to apply without going on camera.

How is my creative work used in AI training?

As ground-truth data: for writers, that means creative generation samples; for voice actors, it often means training text-to-speech models. Check the specific contract details on rights usage for your voice or likeness before signing.

Do creative AI training roles allow creative freedom?

Some, within limits. You're hired for your talent, but most projects still require following strict style guides, like keeping a neutral tone or matching a technical-manual style. Consistency across the dataset matters more than personal expression here.

What does Languages work look like for an Audiobook QA Expert — French?

Tasks here are scoped to Languages, not generic labeling. As an Audiobook QA Expert — French, expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to Languages) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on Languages background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.

What specific skills does this listing call for?

Bilingual, English, and French are named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with these, expect the screening process to test for them directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.

How much does this specific role pay?

This listing is posted at $15–$20/hr, an hourly rate. The range reflects experience level and negotiated terms, not a placeholder, so where you land in it depends on your background and the assessment. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.

Do I need to be fluent in English or French?

Yes. This role specifically requires English or French proficiency, on top of the English most AI training work assumes by default. If English is not a language you're fluent in, this is not the right role. Filter for your native language to find better-matched listings.

What happens when I click Apply on this listing?

You'll be taken to Mercor's external site to complete your application there. This listing links through a referral, but the process is identical to applying directly; the link just routes you correctly. Create an account on their site and follow their onboarding steps.

Can I apply from outside France?

This specific role is open only to people based in France. If you are somewhere else, applying is unlikely to lead to an offer even if you pass the assessment, because the restriction is usually about where the work can legally be contracted rather than your skills. Read the full description for any tax-residency or right-to-work caveats before you apply.

How soon will I start working after applying to Mercor?

Not immediately. Mercor is a talent marketplace, not a task queue, so applying puts you in a pool of candidates. You start working only once a specific client, like a major AI lab, selects your profile, and that matching process can take weeks.
