About this role

From the Mercor listing

1. Role Overview

Mercor is seeking experienced Go engineers to build the dataset that teaches AI agents to reason about real codebases.

Codebase Q&A is a reinforcement-learning environment for training AI agents to explore and reason about software repositories they have never seen before. You will build difficult codebase-exploration tasks: high-level engineering questions about production Go repositories that cannot be answered by reading a single file, and that require runtime evidence to resolve — the kind of question a senior engineer answers by actually investigating the system.

This track works on infrastructure-grade Go codebases including etcd, Traefik, Helm, Kustomize, CoreDNS, NATS Server, Temporal, Syncthing, restic, Authelia, BadgerDB, quic-go, gRPC-Go, Hugo, rclone, Trivy, cert-manager and Pion WebRTC.

Contract, task-based work paid at $130 per approved task, performed remotely in Mercor Studio.

2. Key Responsibilities

  • Select tasks from a pre-validated pool of Go repositories, each pinned to a specific git commit and arriving with an engineering question, positive and negative rubrics, foils, and a golden solution

  • Explore the repository until you genuinely understand the subsystem in question, including the relevant PR or issue history

  • Rewrite the task's question so it defeats frontier coding agents while remaining well-defined and fairly answerable

  • Adjust rubrics and foils so they reward correct reasoning and reject plausible-but-wrong answers

  • Run the full validation loop in Studio — Check, Golden, Run, Analyze — and iterate until every stage passes

  • Document your work in the task README and submit for expert review, addressing reviewer feedback on returned tasks

3. Ideal Qualifications

  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience, with substantial production Go

  • Demonstrated ability to navigate a large, unfamiliar Go codebase and explain how it behaves at runtime — not just what the source says

  • Fluency in Go concurrency, interfaces, module boundaries, and the standard library; comfort reading generated code and build tooling

  • Experience with distributed systems, networking, storage engines, or Kubernetes-ecosystem tooling is highly relevant — the task mix is weighted toward architecture and system design (42%), code onboarding (26%) and root-cause analysis (20%)

  • Precise written English: the questions and rubrics you write are the product

  • Comfortable with git at commit level, containerized environments, and command-line tooling

4. Working Details

  • Fully remote and asynchronous, with expert team leads across US, India, and Nigeria time zones

  • Work is performed in Mercor Studio; time is tracked with Insightful, and platform access is provisioned through Okta

  • Onboarding requires identity verification, a background check, signed Terms of Work and CIIAA, a tax form, and passing a short calibration quiz before task access is granted

  • Payment is per approved task; every task is reviewed by a second engineer and a super reviewer before acceptance

5. Application Process

  • Submit your resume or relevant technical background to get started

  • Qualified applicants may be asked to complete a brief technical assessment or provide additional information

Requirements

  • Must be eligible to work in one of: Remote, India, Nigeria
  • Fluent proficiency in English (Written & Verbal)
  • Reliable high-speed internet connection
  • Master's's degree or equivalent professional experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in Software Engineering

Common questions

Is Mercor for freelancers or full-time contractors?

Mercor places you with one client for a defined engagement, like 'Python Tutor for 3 months', rather than having you grab small tasks from a shared queue. Most roles function as steady contract work, not one-off gigs.

Does Mercor's application require an on-camera interview?

Yes, every applicant records a video interview with an AI interviewer that asks questions about your resume. Clients review that recording to judge communication skills before matching, so there's no way to apply without going on camera.

Why do these AI training roles pay so much?

Because general knowledge isn't what's being tested. The model already knows the basics; what it needs is expertise on edge cases, the rare, difficult, highly technical judgment calls only a senior professional in the field would make correctly.

What does the day-to-day workload look like for elite-expert AI training roles?

Slow and deep, not fast and repetitive. A single task can take 45-60 minutes of researching citations or verifying complex calculations. Quality is what's being measured here, not throughput.

What does Software Engineering work look like for a Software Engineer, Go — Codebase Q&A?

Tasks here are scoped to Software Engineering, not generic labeling. As a Software Engineer, Go — Codebase Q&A, expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to Software Engineering) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on Software Engineering background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.

What specific skills does this listing call for?

Coding and English are named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with these, expect the screening process to test for them directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.

How much does this specific role pay?

This listing is posted at $130/hr, an hourly rate. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.

What happens when I click Apply on this listing?

You'll be taken to Mercor's external site to complete your application there. This listing links through a referral, but the process is identical to applying directly; the link just routes you correctly. Create an account on their site and follow their onboarding steps.

Do I need a Master's to qualify?

This role lists a master's degree as a requirement. In practice, the domain assessment is the real gate. If you can pass it, the degree is usually secondary. However, some platforms verify credentials formally, so list your actual qualifications accurately on your profile.

Can I apply from outside India or Nigeria?

This specific role is open only to people based in India and Nigeria. If you are somewhere else, applying is unlikely to lead to an offer even if you pass the assessment, because the restriction is usually about where the work can legally be contracted rather than your skills. Read the full description for any tax-residency or right-to-work caveats before you apply, since they can differ by country.

How soon will I start working after applying to Mercor?

Not immediately. Mercor is a talent marketplace, not a task queue, so applying puts you in a pool of candidates. You start working only once a specific client, like a major AI lab, selects your profile, and that matching process can take weeks.
