About this role

From the Micro1 listing

Role Title: Senior Mechanical Design Engineer Role Type: Contractor (~15hrs/week) Location: Remote micro1 is engaging Senior Mechanical Design Engineers to contribute to a customer's project involving complex CAD assembly exploration and AI advancement. In this role, you'll apply your expertise to help train next-generation AI systems. Your work will shape how models learn, reason, and perform through high-quality, real-world input. No prior experience in AI is required — your domain knowledge is what matters. Scope of Work

  • Analyze and dissect multi-part mechanical assemblies to identify critical design decisions, constraints, and potential failure points that challenge expert reasoning.
  • Formulate challenging, non-obvious technical questions that test real-world mechanical design judgment, ensuring relevance and difficulty beyond junior-level understanding.
  • Validate and document defensible, exact answers directly from CAD models, ensuring clear traceability and accuracy.
  • Review AI-generated outputs, pinpoint breakdowns or inaccuracies in mechanical reasoning, and suggest targeted improvements.
  • Flag ambiguous, trivial, or unanswerable questions, refining or sharpening them for clarity and precision.
  • Thoroughly document edge cases and sources of disagreement within answers to maintain strict verifiability.
  • Communicate findings and reasoning in clear, professional written and verbal form to support continuous project improvement. Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years of professional experience creating and overseeing multi-part mechanical assemblies from concept, not just from existing drawings.
  • Mastery in at least one major parametric CAD tool (SolidWorks, Creo, NX, CATIA, Inventor, Fusion, Onshape, or Solid Edge).
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching, mentoring, or leading — whether through formal instruction, leading design reviews, or coaching engineering teams.
  • Expertise in design intent, assembly reasoning, mechanism and kinematic analysis, and robust GD&T/tolerance judgment.
  • Background in at least one discipline: industrial machinery and automation, robotics, automotive and heavy equipment, aerospace and defense, medical devices, consumer products, or tooling and fixture design.
  • Exceptional written English communication skills — your documentation directly influences project deliverables.
  • Bonus: Experience with FreeCAD, advanced GD&T/tolerance analysis, or formal design review leadership.

Requirements

  • Design intent & assembly reasoning
  • Parametric modeling depth
  • Mechanism & kinematic sense
  • GD&T & tolerance judgment
  • CAD tools expertise
  • Must be eligible to work in Remote

Common questions

What does the Micro1 application process look like?

Expect a screening interview with Zara, Micro1's AI recruiter. Prepare for it like a real video call: good lighting, clear audio, verbal answers to technical questions. A human manager reviews the recording afterward, and some roles add a short skills assessment on top.

Can I apply to Micro1 from outside the US or UK?

Yes. Micro1 accepts applicants from most countries worldwide, unlike DataAnnotation or Outlier, both of which cap access to a handful of English-speaking countries. Most roles still require strong written and spoken English.

Is academic-niche AI training just data labeling?

No, it's closer to academic research. Expect to write or verify complex proofs, solve advanced equations, or check the logic behind a model's step-by-step reasoning. The goal is teaching AI systems to reason deeply within your specific field.

Do I need a PhD for academic-niche AI training roles?

For the top pay tiers, a PhD or current enrollment is usually expected. But the domain assessment is what decides it: if you can solve the problems, the degree becomes secondary.

What does STEM work look like for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer ?

Tasks here are scoped to STEM, not generic labeling. As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer , expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to STEM) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on STEM background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.

What specific skills does this listing call for?

Design intent & assembly reasoning, Parametric modeling depth, Mechanism & kinematic sense, and GD&T & tolerance judgment are named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with these, expect the screening process to test for them directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.

What does the 'openings' count on this listing mean?

It's Micro1's live count of how many candidates it's still trying to place for this specific role, 20 right now, not a countdown on your individual application. A higher number signals more active demand; it doesn't lower the bar for acceptance.

How much does this specific role pay?

This listing is posted at $40–$90/hr, an hourly rate. The range reflects experience level and negotiated terms, not a placeholder, so where you land in it depends on your background and the assessment. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.

What happens when I click Apply on this listing?

You'll be taken to Micro1's external site to complete your application there. This listing links through a referral, but the process is identical to applying directly; the link just routes you correctly. Create an account on their site and follow their onboarding steps.

Do I need a Master's to qualify?

This role lists a master's degree as a requirement. In practice, the domain assessment is the real gate. If you can pass it, the degree is usually secondary. However, some platforms verify credentials formally, so list your actual qualifications accurately on your profile.
