From the SME Careers listing
In this hourly, remote contractor role, you will work as a Financial Analysis Subject Matter Expert (SME) to review AI-generated financial analysis and business-finance responses and/or create expert finance content, evaluating reasoning quality and step-by-step analytical problem-solving while providing precise written feedback. You will assess solutions for accuracy, clarity, and adherence to the prompt; identify errors in financial modeling logic, assumptions, unit economics, valuation reasoning, forecasting, and metric interpretation; fact-check finance concepts and calculations; write high-quality explanations and model solutions that demonstrate correct methods; and rate and compare multiple responses based on correctness and reasoning quality. This role is with SME Careers, a fast-growing AI Data Services company and subsidiary of SuperAnnotate, delivering training data for many of the world’s largest AI companies and foundation-model labs.
Important: There is no immediate project for this role; however, if qualified, you will be among the first experts we reach out to when relevant opportunities arise. This will also provide you with access to future projects available through our expert network.
Key responsibilities
- Develop AI Training Content: Create detailed prompts and gold-standard finance outputs (models, assumptions tables, narratives, sensitivity analyses, investment-style summaries).
- Optimize AI Performance: Evaluate and rank AI responses to improve numeric correctness, rigor, clarity, and practical usefulness.
- Ensure Model Integrity: Test AI outputs for calculation errors, misleading interpretations, unsafe assumptions, and bias; validate reliability across business scenarios.
Your profile
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, Mathematics/Statistics, or a related field; CFA/MBA is a strong plus.
- 5+ years of professional experience in financial analysis (FP&A, corporate finance, investment banking, equity research, consulting, or similar).
- Strong command of core finance concepts: 3-statement logic, cash flow drivers, working capital, margin analysis, capital allocation, and basic corporate accounting linkage.
- Proven experience building and reviewing financial models (forecasting, scenario/sensitivity analysis, cohort/unit economics, pricing/packaging analyses).
- Comfortable with valuation reasoning (DCF mechanics, comps selection, multiple drivers) and clearly stating assumptions and limitations.
- Strong quantitative rigor and attention to detail (units, sign conventions, time horizons, circularity, error-checks).
- Ability to communicate complex analyses clearly in writing (executive summary, key drivers, risks, recommendations); minimum C1 English proficiency.
- Reliable, self-directed, and able to deliver consistent quality in an hourly, remote contractor workflow across time zones.
- Prior experience with AI data training/annotation, finance QA, investment memo review, or analytics editorial work is strongly preferred.
🌍 Geographic Availability This role is available to qualified experts globally. However, as a U.S.-based company, SME Careers complies with U.S. export control and sanctions regulations. Eligibility depends on your country of residence and any applicable trade restrictions. Some projects may have additional language or region-specific requirements.
💰 Pay Rate May Vary Based on Your Location Your actual compensation will be determined based on your location and local market conditions. See regional job listings for localized pay information, or the application process will clarify your specific rate.
If you're unsure whether you're eligible, proceed with the application—SME's screening will determine your jurisdiction status and applicable compensation.
How long hiring takes
Across the AI training platforms we refer candidates to, the median gap between referral and hire is about 30 days. It varies by platform and role, so treat it as a rough guide for this one.
Interview Prep
Sample questions for a Financial Analyst role, written in-house to help you prepare.
What key assumptions do you stress-test first when reviewing a financial model built by someone else?
I focus on revenue growth rate and margin assumptions first, since small changes there tend to have the largest effect on the output, and I check whether the assumptions are grounded in historical data or market comparables versus being arbitrarily chosen. I also verify the formulas are consistent across periods rather than hardcoded in some cells.
How do you approach valuing a company that has volatile or negative near-term earnings?
I lean more heavily on a discounted cash flow approach with normalized long-term assumptions rather than trailing earnings multiples, since near-term volatility distorts multiple-based valuation. I also look at comparable companies with similar business models to sanity check the output rather than relying on a single method.
What's your process for evaluating the risk of a proposed investment beyond just expected return?
I look at the range of outcomes under different scenarios, not just the base case, and consider correlation with other holdings, since an investment can look attractive in isolation but add concentrated risk to a broader portfolio. Downside scenarios matter as much as the upside case for decision-making.
How do you decide which sensitivity variables to include in a financial model's scenario analysis?
I prioritize variables that both have high uncertainty and high impact on the output, rather than testing every input equally. Running sensitivity on a variable that barely moves the result wastes review time and can obscure the assumptions that actually matter to the decision.
Why this role
This Financial Analyst role pays $85/hr to review AI-generated financial analysis and business-finance content. SME Careers wants five or more years in FP&A, corporate finance, or equity research, with three-statement modeling and cohort or unit-economics analysis specifically named in the requirements. Someone who builds financial models for a living already does the exact review work this role is asking for.

Common questions
Does SME Careers offer a path for advancement?
Yes. SME Careers is unusual among AI training platforms for this: it publishes an explicit career ladder, Data Trainer, then Quality Analyst, then QA Lead, then Project Manager. Consistent, high-quality work is what moves you up it.
How does SME Careers pay freelancers?
Weekly, through Deel. Deel also handles tax compliance, which is how SME Careers pays contractors across more than 40 countries without running its own international payroll.
What does asynchronous AI training work mean in practice?
No set hours, no check-ins, no meetings. You log in when you want, pick up an available task, complete it, and submit; nobody is waiting on you in real time. That's different from remote employment, where you're expected online during business hours. The tradeoff: you're competing with others for available tasks, so an empty queue means there's simply nothing to do until more work is released.
Do task-based AI training roles require an interview?
Most skip a live interview entirely and gate access through an automated assessment or qualification task instead. Where we've confirmed the specific requirement for this listing, it's called out above in What We Know About This Role.
What does Business work look like for a Financial Analyst?
Tasks here are scoped to Business, not generic labeling. As a Financial Analyst, expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to Business) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on Business background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.
What specific skills does this listing call for?
Data Interpretation, English, Valuation (DCF/Comps), and KPI Dashboards are named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with these, expect the screening process to test for them directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.
How much does this specific role pay?
This listing is posted at $85/hr, a per-task rate. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.
What happens when I click Apply on this listing?
You'll be taken to SME Careers's external site to complete your application there. This listing links through a referral, but the process is identical to applying directly; the link just routes you correctly. Create an account on their site and follow their onboarding steps.
