From the SME Careers listing
In this hourly, remote contractor role, you will work as a Norwegian Language Specialist (SME) to review AI-generated Norwegian content and/or create high-quality Norwegian reference content, evaluating language quality and step-by-step reasoning while providing precise written feedback. You will assess outputs for accuracy, fluency, grammar, spelling, tone, cultural appropriateness, and adherence to the prompt; identify errors in meaning, mistranslation, register (formal vs informal), ambiguity, and logical consistency; fact-check claims when needed; write high-quality rewrites and model answers that demonstrate best practices in Norwegian writing; and rate and compare multiple AI responses based on correctness and overall quality.
This role is with SME Careers, a fast-growing AI Data Services company and subsidiary of SuperAnnotate, delivering training data for many of the world’s largest AI companies and foundation-model labs. Your Norwegian expertise directly helps improve the world’s premier AI models by making their Norwegian language output more natural, reliable, culturally accurate, and clearly written.
Important: There is no immediate project for this role; however, if qualified, you will be among the first experts we reach out to when relevant opportunities arise. This will also provide you with access to future projects available through our expert network.
Key responsibilities
- Develop AI Training Content: Create prompts and gold-standard Norwegian answers across multiple domains (general knowledge, customer support, education, conversational writing).
- Optimize AI Performance: Evaluate and rank AI outputs to improve fluency, correctness, tone match, and cultural appropriateness.
- Ensure Model Integrity: Detect unsafe or misleading content, factual hallucinations, bias, and policy-risk language; validate reliability across use cases.
Your profile
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Linguistics, Norwegian/English Literature, Communications, Journalism, Translation, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
- Native or near-native Norwegian proficiency (reading and writing required).
- Strong professional proficiency in English (minimum C1) to follow guidelines and provide detailed feedback in English.
- 3+ years of professional experience in writing, editing, localization, translation, content QA, journalism, education, or related language-focused work.
- Deep understanding of Norwegian grammar, spelling conventions, punctuation, and style—able to explain why something is wrong and how to fix it.
- Comfortable handling Norwegian written standards as required: Bokmål and/or Nynorsk (please specify which you can support).
- High attention to detail when spotting subtle meaning shifts, awkward literal translations, hallucinated claims, or culturally mismatched phrasing.
- Reliable, self-directed, and able to deliver consistent quality in an hourly, remote contractor workflow across time zones.
- Prior experience with AI data training/annotation, translation QA, editorial QA, or rubric-based evaluation is strongly preferred.
🌍 Geographic Availability This role is available to qualified experts globally. However, as a U.S.-based company, SME Careers complies with U.S. export control and sanctions regulations. Eligibility depends on your country of residence and any applicable trade restrictions. Some projects may have additional language or region-specific requirements.
💰 Pay Rate May Vary Based on Your Location Your actual compensation will be determined based on your location and local market conditions. See regional job listings for localized pay information, or the application process will clarify your specific rate.
If you're unsure whether you're eligible, proceed with the application—SME's screening will determine your jurisdiction status and applicable compensation.
How long hiring takes
Across the AI training platforms we refer candidates to, the median gap between referral and hire is about 30 days. It varies by platform and role, so treat it as a rough guide for this one.
Why this role
Norwegian fluency is scarce enough in the AI training market that this Language Expert role pays $55/hr, well above what most language-review work commands. The job involves rating AI-generated Norwegian responses for grammar, tone, and cultural fit, then producing gold-standard rewrites where the model gets it wrong. A near-native reader can do this work on hours they set themselves, since SME Careers runs the role as a remote contractor position rather than a fixed shift.

Common questions
How does SME Careers pay freelancers?
Weekly, through Deel. Deel also handles tax compliance, which is how SME Careers pays contractors across more than 40 countries without running its own international payroll.
Is SME Careers work ongoing or project-based?
Project-based. Assignment duration and availability vary by project, but consistently high-quality work earns priority access to whatever comes next.
Do task-based AI training roles require an interview?
Most skip a live interview entirely and gate access through an automated assessment or qualification task instead. Where we've confirmed the specific requirement for this listing, it's called out above in What We Know About This Role.
What does task-based AI training work look like?
Practical, hands-on data work: recording short videos, categorizing images, rating text responses, or analyzing data. Tasks are designed to be short and distinct, typically 5 to 60 minutes each.
What does Languages work look like for a Norwegian Language Expert?
Tasks here are scoped to Languages, not generic labeling. As a Norwegian Language Expert, expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to Languages) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on Languages background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.
What specific skills does this listing call for?
Translation Quality Review, Localization, Grammar & Style, and Tone & Register are named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with these, expect the screening process to test for them directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.
How much does this specific role pay?
This listing is posted at $55/hr, a per-task rate. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.
What happens when I click Apply on this listing?
You'll be taken to SME Careers's external site to complete your application there. This listing links through a referral, but the process is identical to applying directly; the link just routes you correctly. Create an account on their site and follow their onboarding steps.
Who is behind SME Careers?
