About this Role

We are looking for a Founding Customer Success Manager with 3, 8 years of experience to own a growing book of ~100 accounts and build the customer success playbook from scratch at Craft, an AI sales platform for the trillion-dollar home services industry. This is a revenue role at a bootstrapped, profitable startup that has grown from zero to 7-figure ARR in under a year, and you'll have massive upside as the first dedicated CS hire.

What you need

  • 3, 8 years in customer success, account management, or a revenue-oriented role with a track record of driving NRR and expansion
  • Commercially minded builder who creates processes from zero, not someone who needs established playbooks to be effective
  • Startup experience or a clear builder/founder mentality; comfortable with ambiguity and wearing multiple hats
  • Must work on-site 5 days/week in FiDi, New York City
  • Comfortable with 10, 25% travel to meet customers where they are

What will you be doing?

  • Own retention, expansion, and referrals across your book of business, treating your portfolio like your own P&L

  • Build the next iteration of the CS playbook: onboarding flows, health scoring, QBR cadences, and renewal processes

  • Go deep with customers to understand their pain points, build trust, and unlock upsell and cross-sell opportunities

  • Travel 10, 25% to customer offices and job sites to build real relationships with operators in the trades

  • Lay the foundation to eventually hire and lead a CS team as the company scales

Interview Prep

Sample questions for a Customer Success Manager role, written in-house to help you prepare.

How do you identify which customer accounts are at risk of churning before they actually show a decline in usage?

I track leading indicators rather than waiting for usage decline itself, like a drop in login frequency among key users, reduced engagement with newer features, or a change in the primary point of contact. By the time usage has visibly declined, the account is often already at significant risk, so the goal is catching the earlier signals that precede that drop.

How do you structure a customer success plan for a new enterprise account to ensure they realize value quickly after onboarding?

I define specific, measurable milestones tied to the customer's actual stated goals within the first 30, 60, and 90 days, rather than a generic onboarding checklist. Anchoring the plan to what the customer defined as success, not just product adoption metrics we care about internally, keeps the plan focused on outcomes that will actually drive renewal.

What metrics do you use to measure customer health beyond just product usage data?

I combine usage data with relationship signals like responsiveness to outreach, sentiment expressed in check-ins, and stakeholder engagement across the account, not just the primary contact. A customer can show healthy usage metrics while the actual relationship is fragile, particularly if the champion driving adoption is disengaged or has left the company.

How do you approach a renewal conversation with a customer whose usage has been declining but hasn't formally raised any complaints?

I'd proactively raise the usage decline myself rather than waiting for the customer to bring it up, since silence from a customer with declining usage often means disengagement rather than satisfaction. Framing the conversation around understanding what changed for them, rather than defending the product, usually surfaces the real issue before it hardens into a lost renewal.
