What to Expect

Lao language evaluation tasks assess AI Lao for script accuracy, grammatical correctness, and natural expression. Lao is closely related to Thai and uses a similar Brahmic-derived script, but Lao has its own distinct orthography, tonal system (6 tones), and vocabulary. Tasks evaluate correct Lao script usage, tonal accuracy in audio recordings, and natural Lao vocabulary selection (as opposed to Thai equivalents). Like Thai, Lao has no spaces between words in traditional orthography, and correct word boundary handling matters. Register and formality variation tasks assess whether AI correctly uses formal Lao versus colloquial everyday speech. Audio tasks involve recording in natural Lao speech for synthesis training. Native speaker or near-native fluency is required. Lao AI training data is very limited, making expert evaluation highly impactful.
