Role Title: Civil Engineer
Role Type: Contractor
Location: Remote
micro1 is engaging Civil Engineers to contribute their expertise to a high-impact customer project. In this role, you'll apply your expertise to help train next-generation AI systems. Your work will shape how models learn, reason, and perform through high-quality, real-world input. No prior experience in AI is required — your domain knowledge is what matters. Scope of Work
- Design and author authentic civil engineering evaluation tasks reflecting real-world complexity in areas such as structural design, transportation, water systems, and site development.
- Source, generate, and curate technical documents including engineering drawings, geotechnical reports, specification sheets, cost estimates, and regulatory code references.
- Develop challenging technical problems that require nuanced constraint reasoning and code compliance, mimicking professional engineering scenarios.
- Determine the accurate engineering solution for each task, ensuring all relevant regulatory and geometric constraints are satisfied.
- Craft comprehensive, multi-item rubrics designed for LLM-based assessment, grading solutions for technical correctness and adherence to codes.
- Create and validate high-volume, realistic data files (CSVs, PDFs, spreadsheets) representative of typical project documentation.
- Collaborate with project stakeholders to iteratively refine task clarity, realism, and evaluative standards. Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience contributing to civil engineering projects across diverse domains.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or active pursuit of licensure strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated mastery in preparing and managing technical documentation, including code-compliance and design specifications.
- Experience sourcing and interpreting regulatory codes and integrating them into technical solutions.
- Proficiency in generating or reviewing complex technical artifacts such as drawings, reports, and data sets used for project evaluation.
- Ability to reason about intricate constraints and deliver solutions that reflect real-world engineering practice.
- Strong written communication skills for authoring clear, comprehensive evaluation materials. Compensation Structure Compensation is output-based; experts are paid per task that meets the project specifications. The time required to complete work may vary depending on the expert’s experience and workflow. Minimum submission requirements apply. Experts must submit a minimum of tasks per week. Start Timeline & Availability We typically fill roles within 48 hours and are looking for experts ready to jump in right away. If selected, we expect you to start your first tasks within 24–48 hours of completing onboarding.

How long hiring takes
Across the AI training platforms we refer candidates to, the median gap between referral and hire is about 30 days. It varies by platform and role, so treat it as a rough guide for this one.
Interview Prep
Sample questions for a Civil Engineer role, written in-house to help you prepare.
How do you approach structural analysis for a project with unusual or asymmetric loading conditions?
I start with a conservative simplified model to get a baseline estimate, then move to detailed finite element analysis for the specific asymmetric conditions, since simplified assumptions built for symmetric loads can significantly underestimate stress in irregular structures. I validate results against known behavior of similar structures where possible.
What factors do you weigh when selecting a foundation type for a site with variable soil conditions?
I rely on the geotechnical report to understand soil bearing capacity and variability across the site, and I favor a foundation type that tolerates that variability, like deep foundations over shallow ones, when conditions are inconsistent. Cost matters, but not at the expense of a foundation that only works under best-case soil assumptions.
How do you incorporate sustainability goals into a structural design without compromising safety margins?
I look for sustainable choices that don't touch the safety factor, like specifying materials with lower embodied carbon that meet the same structural performance requirements, or optimizing member sizing to reduce material use where the structural analysis supports it. Safety margins are never the place to find sustainability savings.
What's your process for managing scope changes on a project that's already under construction?
I evaluate the structural and schedule impact of the change before approving it, since a seemingly minor scope change can cascade into significant rework if it affects load paths already built. I document the change and its impact clearly so the cost and schedule implications are visible to stakeholders.
Key responsibilities
- Design and author authentic civil engineering evaluation tasks reflecting real-world complexity in areas such as structural design, transportation, water systems, and site development.
- Source, generate, and curate technical documents including engineering drawings, geotechnical reports, specification sheets, cost estimates, and regulatory code references.
- Develop challenging technical problems that require nuanced constraint reasoning and code compliance, mimicking professional engineering scenarios.
- Determine the accurate engineering solution for each task, ensuring all relevant regulatory and geometric constraints are satisfied.
Why this role
Micro1's Civil Engineer role pays $50-$100 per task for engineers who design and author authentic civil engineering evaluation tasks grounded in code compliance and constraint reasoning. The project draws on real civil engineering judgment rather than textbook problems, so technical documentation skill matters alongside the engineering itself. This role suits engineers already comfortable reasoning through competing design constraints.

Common questions
Can I apply to Micro1 from outside the US or UK?
Yes. Micro1 accepts applicants from most countries worldwide, unlike DataAnnotation or Outlier, both of which cap access to a handful of English-speaking countries. Most roles still require strong written and spoken English.
Does Micro1 monitor your computer while you work?
On many projects, yes, through time-tracking tools that take periodic screenshots to verify active hours. Check the specific project's requirements before accepting if desktop monitoring is a dealbreaker.
Do I need a PhD for academic-niche AI training roles?
For the top pay tiers, a PhD or current enrollment is usually expected. But the domain assessment is what decides it: if you can solve the problems, the degree becomes secondary.
Is academic-niche AI training a continuous job?
Usually not. Work runs in campaigns, like training a model specifically on quantum mechanics, that might last a few weeks. Treat it as a high-paying fellowship or grant rather than a permanent daily job.
What does STEM work look like for a Civil Engineer?
Tasks here are scoped to STEM, not generic labeling. As a Civil Engineer, expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to STEM) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on STEM background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.
What specific skills does this listing call for?
Code compliance, Civil Engineering, Technical documentation, and Constraint reasoning are named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with these, expect the screening process to test for them directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.
What does the 'openings' count on this listing mean?
It's Micro1's live count of how many candidates it's still trying to place for this specific role, 50 right now, not a countdown on your individual application. A higher number signals more active demand; it doesn't lower the bar for acceptance.
How much does this specific role pay?
This listing is posted at $50–$100/task, a per-task rate. The range reflects experience level and negotiated terms, not a placeholder, so where you land in it depends on your background and the assessment. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.
How does per-task pay translate to an hourly rate?
It doesn't directly, that's the catch. Each task has a listed price and an estimated completion time, but your actual effective rate depends on how fast you work. If a task is estimated at 20 minutes and pays $8, that is $24/hr for a fast worker and $12/hr for a slow one. Track your actual time on the first few tasks before treating the listed rate as your real hourly income.
What happens when I click Apply on this listing?
You'll be taken to Micro1's external site to complete your application there. This listing links through a referral, but the process is identical to applying directly; the link just routes you correctly. Create an account on their site and follow their onboarding steps.
Do I need a Master's to qualify?
This role lists a master's degree as a requirement. In practice, the domain assessment is the real gate. If you can pass it, the degree is usually secondary. However, some platforms verify credentials formally, so list your actual qualifications accurately on your profile.
