What to Expect
New Zealand hours fall when most US and European contractors are offline, which suits async task queues with no fixed schedule. Māori language roles and New Zealand English audio work need native speakers, so they draw on a small pool. Everything else open here is general English work in writing, reasoning, and coding review.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to pay tax on AI training income in New Zealand?
Yes. Income from overseas platforms is self-employed income and goes on an IR3 return to Inland Revenue, since these platforms don't withhold New Zealand tax.
Do I need to register a company to start?
No. You can work as a sole trader with your IRD number, with no business registration. Register for GST once your self-employed turnover passes NZ$60,000 in a 12-month period.
How do I get paid?
Wise or Payoneer usually beat PayPal on the USD-to-NZD conversion. The spread changes, so compare it when you set up your payout method.
Is remote AI training work legit for people in New Zealand?
Yes. SME Careers, Mercor, Mindrift and Outlier have roles open to New Zealand contractors today, and micro1 hires globally. Apply through the platform's own site and never pay a fee to start.
Does this affect ACC levies?
Yes. ACC levies apply to self-employed earnings on top of income tax. Budget for them when you work out what an hourly rate is worth to you.
How many New Zealand AI training jobs are open right now?
This page is showing 931 listings open to contractors in New Zealand, sourced from 9 platforms: Micro1 (311), Ethos (236), SME Careers (220), Turing (140) and Mercor (14). The most recent one was picked up today. The count moves as platforms post and close roles, so treat it as a snapshot of today rather than a fixed figure.
What do New Zealand AI training jobs pay?
Most sit between $65 and $100 an hour, with a median of $75, measured across the 522 listings on this page that quote an hourly rate. The highest rate currently posted here is $400 an hour. These are the figures the platforms published, not our estimates, and the rate you are offered depends on how you do in that platform's assessment.
Are New Zealand roles paid hourly or per task?
Both appear here. 44 listings pay per task or per project rather than by the hour, and the rest quote an hourly rate. Per-task work suits people who are fast and accurate, since your effective hourly rate depends on how long each unit takes you.
