From the Alignerr listing

What You'll Do

  • Listen to audio recordings and compare them against existing transcripts in Simplified Chinese
  • Correct errors in transcription — including wrong characters, missing words, misheard phrases, and punctuation issues
  • Ensure word-level accuracy and verify exact timing and alignment of transcript segments
  • Follow detailed style and formatting guidelines consistently across all tasks

  • Maintain high accuracy and consistency across large volumes of transcript data
  • Work independently on task-based assignments at your own pace and on your own schedule

About the Role

What if your fluency in Simplified Chinese and your sharp ear for spoken language could directly influence how AI understands Mandarin for hundreds of millions of people? We're looking for Audio Transcript Editors in the New York metro area to clean up, correct, and polish audio transcripts — ensuring every character, phrase, and timestamp is precisely accurate. New York's large, highly educated Mandarin-speaking community is an ideal home for this kind of precision language work. You'll listen to recordings, compare them against existing transcripts, and make the careful, word-level corrections that train AI systems to genuinely understand spoken Chinese. If you notice when a single character is off or a timestamp is misaligned, this role was built for you. This is a fully remote, flexible contract role — work from anywhere on your own schedule. No prior AI experience required.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote
  • Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

Who You Are

  • Native or near-native proficiency in Simplified Chinese — reading, writing, and listening
  • Exceptional listening skills with the ability to parse speech clearly, even in challenging audio conditions
  • Extremely detail-oriented with a methodical, patient approach to repetitive precision work
  • Comfortable working with word-level accuracy and exact timing or timestamps
  • Able to follow structured, detailed style and formatting guidelines with consistency
  • Self-motivated and reliable when working independently
  • No prior AI or tech experience required

Nice to Have

  • Experience as a transcriptionist, court reporter, or stenographer
  • Background in subtitle editing, closed-captioning, or dubbing
  • Linguistics, phonetics, or language studies education
  • Prior work with annotation platforms, data labeling tools, or speech-to-text systems
  • Familiarity with audio editing software or transcript alignment tools
  • Experience working with multiple Chinese dialects or regional accents

Why Join Us

  • Work on cutting-edge AI projects alongside leading research labs
  • Fully remote and flexible — work when and where it suits you
  • Freelance autonomy with the structure of meaningful, task-based work
  • Contribute to AI development that directly improves how technology understands spoken Chinese
  • Develop and sharpen highly marketable transcription and annotation skills
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch

Common questions

How hard is the Alignerr assessment?

Hard, and unforgiving. Alignerr uses TestGorilla for timed, role-specific tests: a blank coding environment for engineers, strict grammar and fact-checking for writers. Treat it as one shot. Failing or abandoning it typically locks you out of that role permanently, with no retake.

How soon can I start earning on Alignerr after passing the assessment?

Not right away. After passing, you still complete identity verification through Persona and billing setup through Deel, then wait in a pool for weeks or months. You only start earning once a project matching your specific skills launches and assigns you. Don't count on Alignerr income until you're actively placed on a project.

How is my creative work used in AI training?

As ground-truth data: for writers, that means creative generation samples; for voice actors, it often means training text-to-speech models. Check the specific contract details on rights usage for your voice or likeness before signing.

Do creative AI training roles allow creative freedom?

Some, within limits. You're hired for your talent, but most projects still require following strict style guides, like keeping a neutral tone or matching a technical-manual style. Consistency across the dataset matters more than personal expression here.

What does Writing work look like for a Simplified Chinese Audio Transcript Editor?

Tasks here are scoped to Writing, not generic labeling. As a Simplified Chinese Audio Transcript Editor, expect to draw on real domain judgment (evaluating outputs, correcting errors, or providing expert reasoning specific to Writing) rather than following a one-size-fits-all rubric. If you don't have hands-on Writing background, this is likely not the right listing to start with.

What specific skills does this listing call for?

Chinese, Mandarin, and Polish are named directly in the listing. If you don't have hands-on experience with these, expect the screening process to test for them directly rather than accepting adjacent experience as a substitute.

How much does this specific role pay?

This listing is posted at $10–$35/hr, an hourly rate. The range reflects experience level and negotiated terms, not a placeholder, so where you land in it depends on your background and the assessment. Pay can change between when we last checked the listing and when you apply, so confirm the current number on the platform's own application page before committing time.

Do I need to be fluent in Chinese, Mandarin, or Polish?

Yes. This role specifically requires Chinese, Mandarin, or Polish proficiency, on top of the English most AI training work assumes by default. If Chinese is not a language you're fluent in, this is not the right role. Filter for your native language to find better-matched listings.

Do I need a Master's to qualify?

This role lists a master's degree as a requirement. In practice, the domain assessment is the real gate. If you can pass it, the degree is usually secondary. However, some platforms verify credentials formally, so list your actual qualifications accurately on your profile.

Can I apply from outside China?

This specific role is open only to people based in China. If you are somewhere else, applying is unlikely to lead to an offer even if you pass the assessment, because the restriction is usually about where the work can legally be contracted rather than your skills. Read the full description for any tax-residency or right-to-work caveats before you apply.

What is the barrier to entry for Alignerr?

A difficult, timed technical assessment in your specific domain, like Python, physics, or language. Passing it is required before you're eligible for any paid projects.
