What to Expect

Chinese language evaluation tasks cover both Mandarin and Cantonese, with clear specification of which variety each task targets. Mandarin tasks assess tonal accuracy descriptions in audio, correct character selection among homophones, natural measure word (classifier) usage, and appropriate formal versus colloquial register. The Simplified/Traditional character distinction is task-specific: Simplified for Mainland China tasks, Traditional for Taiwan tasks, Traditional (Hong Kong variant) for Cantonese tasks. Cantonese tasks require knowledge of Cantonese-specific vocabulary, grammar (different from Mandarin in important ways), and the Cantonese written colloquial tradition. Audio tasks involve recording in authentic Mandarin or Cantonese speech. Native speaker or near-native fluency in the specified variety is required.
