What to Expect

Mandarin Chinese evaluation tasks assess AI Mandarin across tonal accuracy, character correctness, grammatical naturalness, and cultural appropriateness. Tonal errors—using the wrong tone on a character in context—are evaluated both in audio recordings and in pinyin-annotated text tasks. Character selection tasks test whether AI chooses the correct homophone for context (a frequent AI error in Chinese). Grammar tasks evaluate measure word selection, aspect marker usage (了, 过, 着), and the ba-construction. Register tasks assess whether AI Mandarin appropriately distinguishes formal written Chinese (书面语) from natural spoken style. Simplified characters are standard for Mainland China tasks; Traditional characters are used for Taiwan-targeted tasks. Native speaker or C2-level fluency with strong written Chinese competency is required.
