What to Expect

Vietnamese language evaluation tasks focus on a tonal language with six tones, significant Northern/Central/Southern dialect variation, and an alphabetic script with complex diacritic usage. Tonal accuracy in audio tasks is a primary evaluation criterion—the six tones (ngang, huyền, sắc, nặng, hỏi, ngã) are phonemically distinctive and AI synthesis often renders them imprecisely. Written tasks evaluate correct diacritic usage (both tone marks and vowel quality marks) and accurate orthography. Dialect tasks distinguish between Hanoi Vietnamese (Northern standard), Hue Vietnamese (Central), and Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City Vietnamese (Southern)—these differ in tone realization, vocabulary, and some grammatical features. Tasks specify the target dialect. Audio tasks involve recording in authentic Vietnamese speech. Native speaker or near-native fluency in the specified variety is required.
